60-seater MV Silverstone ferry starts operating on Lake Kariba

MV Silverstone, a passenger and cargo ferry, has started operating on Lake Kariba, restoring water transport on the busy Kariba-Chalala route.

The ferry, operated by Most High Ferries, was officially launched in September to fill the gap left by MV RIDA Mbuya Nehanda, which capsized on 11 August, killing 97 people.

The vessel is certified to carry both passengers and cargo and has a capacity of 60 passengers and four crew members.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Advocate Felix Mhona, confirmed the development in an interview with The Herald.

“We launched but had to wait for the traditional rites to be completed. The ferry boat has since started operating,” he said.

“However, RIDA is procuring two additional boats. While we are doing the procurement process, the Silverstone is mitigating the gap left by the RIDA boat.

“Our Lake Captain has gone through the necessary approvals of the boat in terms of safety issues and compliance, so they are ready to start.”

Most High Ferries director Hillard Mangove said operations have commenced and that additional safety measures have been put in place.

The ferry will carry 120 life jackets and floaters, almost double its passenger and crew capacity, and will be accompanied by two speedboats.

The vessel will operate along the Kariba-Chalala route, with stops at Kings Camp Fishing Camp and Musambakaruma Fishing Camp.

A trip from Kariba to Kings Camp will cost US$8, to Musambakaruma US$13, and to Chalala US$15.

The ferry will also support the local lake economy by transporting goods such as ice blocks for preserving fish and salt used for drying and preserving kapenta.

Its launch follows a two-day cleansing ceremony held by traditional leaders in Kariba after the August disaster.

The rituals were led by Chief Mola and Chief Priest Lusinga at Snake Island, Kariba Island and the dam wall.
