The Federal Lawmaker representing Ikwo and Ezza South constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Chinedu Ogah, has brokered peace in the crisis that erupted between journalists and suspected political thugs in Ebonyi State.
The rift, which occured on August 1st 2026, at Idembia Ezza South Local Government Area, led to the attack on media practitioners covering an event organised by an opposition party in the state.
Sequel to the incident, the leadership of the Correspondents Chapel of Nigerian Union of Journalists petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS), Police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) respectively, calling for arrest and prosecution of the suspects.
However, Ogah’s mediation efforts resulted in both parties opting for harmonious settlement of the dispute.
Addressing a joint news conference in Abakaliki, the lawmaker, flanked by both the Chairmen of NUJ and Correspondents Chapel, Comrade Samson Nwafor and Uchenna Orji respectively, said the parley was a follow-up to earlier peace efforts aimed at finding an amicable solution to the impasse.
“As a peace maker and member of the National Assembly, I pleaded with the journalists to withdraw the matter from the security agencies for peaceful resolution”
Ogah cautioned erring politicians to shun any act that may impede the effective operations of newsmen in the state.
He assured that henceforth no journalists would be molested in the course of discharging their official responsibilities.
Contributing, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Samson Nwafor, extolled the leadership qualities of the lawmaker, describing his mediation efforts in the dispute as worthwhile.
The NUJ boss stated that journalists were committed to the prevailing peace existing in the state.
In a reaction, the Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel, Comrade Uchenna Inya, said that journalists resolved to support the peace efforts initiated by Hon Chinedu Ogah.
Inya pleaded that media practitioners be given unfettered access in the coverage of lawful events in the state.
