Exciting Family Show Oliver! Comes to the Artscape Opera House This Festive Season

Get ready to consider yourself well and truly entertained! This festive season, Cape Town is set to light up with a theatrical spectacle like no other. Pieter Toerien and Cape Town Opera, by special arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh, are bringing Lionel Bart’s legendary musical OLIVER! to the iconic Artscape Opera House from 11 December 2026 to 17 January 2027.

If you are looking for the ultimate holiday outing that will captivate grandparents, parents, and kids alike, this is the golden ticket you’ve been waiting for.

High Drama, Big Energy, and Pure Magic

Why does a grand musical like OLIVER! need to be so electrifyingly entertaining? Because modern family outings demand genuine magic! In a world dominated by digital screens, bringing the story of Charles Dickens’ brave little orphan to life requires sweeping spectacle, undeniable heart, and show-stopping energy. Entertainment at this level isn’t just a night out—it’s about creating shared, lifelong memories that leave the whole family buzzing long after the final curtain call.

Directed by the acclaimed Steven Stead, this production promises dynamic choreography, breathtaking Victorian period costumes, and a sprawling, richly atmospheric set that transports you straight into the bustling heart of 19th-century London.

A Star-Studded Cast Takes the Stage

South Africa’s finest musical theatre royalty are gathering to bring these beloved, larger-than-life characters to the stage. Leading the stellar ensemble is the incomparable Jonathan Roxmouth (Chicago, A Little Night Music) as the wily, charismatic Fagin, alongside the phenomenal Bethany Dickson (The Addams Family, BUDDY) as the courageous, warm-hearted Nancy.

Joining them are stage heavyweight Graham Hopkins as Mr Brownlow, opera powerhouse William Berger as the pompous Mr Bumble, and the magnetic Richard Gau as the notorious villain Bill Sikes. With Daniel Anderson bringing cheek and charm as the Artful Dodger, plus an incredible cast of 25 talented children bringing Fagin’s gang to life, the stage is set for pure magic.

Unforgettable Anthems for All Generations

From the moment the opening notes chime, you’ll be singing along to one of the most celebrated scores in English literature. Get ready to tap your feet and chime in to timeless classics like “Food, Glorious Food”, “Consider Yourself”, and Fagin’s brilliant “Reviewing the Situation”. It is a soundtrack that crosses generations, delivering goosebumps, laughter, and a few tears along the way.

At its core, OLIVER! is a deeply human story of courage, friendship, and the relentless search for a place to call home—an uplifting message that feels warmer and more relevant than ever during the holiday season.
