Presidential Nominee 2027: Opposition Could Name a Consensus Candidate Days Before the January 16 Vote

Nigerians who hoped the opposition would settle on one presidential nominee soon may be in for a long wait. Salihu Lukman, convener of the G100 political pressure group, says the parties trying to build an alliance against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could announce their consensus candidate just days before the 2027 poll.

Lukman, a former APC national vice chairman, said this on Channels Television’s Hard Copy programme, in reports published on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The presidential election is fixed for Saturday, January 16, 2027, which leaves about 13 weeks.

What Lukman actually said about the consensus presidential nominee

Asked when Nigerians should expect an answer, Lukman refused to name a date. The announcement, he said, could come two months out, a few weeks out, or a few days before voting. When it does come, he expects the opposition to tell the country which way to go, and everyone to fall in line.

He insisted the process is moving. His confidence, he said, comes from watching the leadership of the parties involved, who he described as committed and working through the necessary steps. The alliance has also grown beyond the six parties that started the talks, and those parties are reaching out to others.

Lukman was candid about the main obstacle. It is not policy, he said, but trust, and the shortage of it runs between the parties as well as between their candidates.

How the talks got here

The G100 grew out of an all-opposition summit in Ibadan in April 2026, where participants resolved to work toward a single candidate against the APC. A second summit on August 31, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, brought together six parties: the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

That meeting agreed on a Central Leadership Committee, with publicity and legal committees alongside it. It also proposed five working groups. One is meant to work out how a single presidential nominee could be chosen. Another is to draft a common minimum programme of action.

The leadership committee held its first meeting on September 16 and agreed that the chairmanship would rotate among the participating parties. Parties were asked to nominate their representatives by September 18. Premium Times reported it could not confirm whether every nomination came in, or whether any working group has handed in a report.

Lukman said the parties and their candidates have since taken ownership of the process from the pressure group. Each party’s delegate to the working group would come either from its presidential candidate or from the party itself, so that decisions stay with those who carry the ballot, not outsiders.

Who the main presidential candidates are

INEC’s final list, published in September, names 18 presidential candidates. These are the ones most often mentioned in the alliance talks:

Candidate Party Note Bola Ahmed Tinubu APC Incumbent, running again with Kashim Shettima Atiku Abubakar ADC Former vice president, a repeat candidate Peter Obi NDC Running with Rabiu Kwankwaso as his vice-presidential candidate Donald Duke PRP Former Cross River governor Seyi Makinde APM Oyo State governor Adewole Adebayo SDP Pledged a starting pump price of ₦300 per litre for petrol

The ADC says it is not negotiating a single ticket

Lukman’s timeline raises a problem, because the party with the biggest name on the list does not describe the talks the way he does. ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi told Premium Times on Saturday that the party is fully involved in the G100-facilitated talks. He said, however, that they are about electoral cooperation, such as protecting votes and parties backing one another where each is strongest, and not about a single presidential candidate.

Abdullahi said the ADC has received no formal proposal for Atiku to step aside for Obi. Asked directly whether the party was negotiating a consensus candidate, he said no. He also said the meetings are happening at the level of party chairmen and secretaries and that he has not been briefed on their progress.

Premium Times noted that these two accounts leave unresolved whether the common-candidate framework will become part of the formal negotiations.

Kwankwaso’s call for Atiku to step aside

The pressure on Atiku is not coming only from the G100. On Thursday, Kwankwaso, Obi’s running mate on the NDC ticket, appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today and answered “Well, yes” when asked whether he wants Atiku to drop his ambition and back Obi, according to The Sun. The Sun published that on Friday, and the ADC’s response came the next day.

Lukman has taken a similar line without naming a side. In his interview he warned that holding a rigid position is almost like working for the APC. He said many people who signed the G100’s open letter lean toward either Obi or Atiku, and that the group’s reminder to them is that the country comes before any individual. He also pointed to remarks by John Cardinal Onaiyekan, arguing that an opposition cannot split its votes several ways and expect one of them to win.

The alliance does not plan to merge party manifestos. Lukman said the aim is a minimum programme of action that a post-2027 opposition government would prioritise, and that every candidate in the process would sign up to it before the election. If any of them ends up the consensus candidate, he said, there would be no argument over the programme.

The differences are real. He cited the SDP candidate’s ₦300 petrol pledge and Atiku’s proposed domestic petroleum production subsidy as examples of policies that would need to be reconciled or clarified.

He also said the eventual candidate could come from the ADC, from another party, or from a new party created by the alliance. That last option raises a practical question the reports reviewed do not address: how a late-chosen candidate would fit onto a ballot whose candidate list INEC has already published.

The APC’s reaction

The ruling party is not worried. On Thursday, October 15, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda said none of Atiku, Obi, Duke and Makinde could match President Tinubu’s record. He said no other party currently has a more credible candidate.

The APC has also been busy on its own side of the field. The Associated Press reported in August that 31 of Nigeria’s 36 state governors now belong to the APC. This week, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who remains a PDP member, said he helped the APC defeat his own party’s candidate in the 2024 Edo governorship election, and was named APC campaign coordinator for Rivers State and the FCT. The PDP is one of the six parties in the opposition talks.

Prediction markets favour the president. Polymarket gave Tinubu about a 74 percent chance of winning on October 13, though betting odds are a rough guide at best, not a forecast.

For the opposition, a late announcement carries a clear risk. The 2023 election drew a turnout of about 27 percent, and voters who are unsure which candidate carries the opposition banner may simply stay home. A late announcement also leaves little time for campaigning, since INEC’s campaign window for the presidential race opened on August 19.

For the alliance’s supporters, a late announcement may also be the price of keeping the talks alive. Each party has put up a candidate with a following, and any early move could break the process before it produces anything.

Nothing is settled. No candidate has been named, no working group has published recommendations, and the ADC says it is not even negotiating one. The next few weeks will show whether the opposition can produce a single presidential nominee or goes into January with several.
