MWANZA: THE Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Denis Londo, said it is time for Tanzania to enter a new commercial phase by focusing more on the quality of locally produced products so that they can compete in regional and international markets.
Londo said this today, September 4, 2026, in Mwanza during the East African Business Expo currently underway at Furahisha grounds, explaining that increased trade interaction within the East African Community and moving towards the larger African market requires Tanzanian producers to improve the quality of their products.
He said in a free market environment, product quality is a fundamental factor as it gives local products a chance to compete with those from other countries, while increasing consumer and buyer confidence.
“A new commercial era has arrived to look at how we produce products due to the existence of regional interactions. The quality of what you produce is important to be given priority,” Mr Londo said.
He said that towards the implementation of the 2050 Development Vision, where the country’s population is expected to increase to 130 million, the success of the private sector will depend largely on the ability to produce quality products that meet market needs.
Mr Londo said the increase in population along with opportunities arising from regional and African markets is an important stimulus for the private sector, but manufacturers must ensure that their products have quality that can compete in the market.

For his part, the Director General of the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade), Mr Ephraim Mafuru, said that for Tanzania to succeed in ensuring that its products have internationally acceptable quality, institutions responsible for the control of standards and measurements must carry out their duties accurately and professionally.
Mr Mafuru urged the institutions, including the Weight Measurement Agency (WMA) and the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), to ensure that they manage and comply with international standards so that locally produced products can attract domestic and international buyers.
On her side WMA Information Officer, Ms Veronica Simba, said they have received feedback from many citizens who need more education about the standards and measurements of various products they buy.
Simba said some of the products that citizens have been needing more education about their measurements are roofing sheets, cooking gases, construction materials including mothballs as well as food products and their weights.
She said WMA is committed to ensuring that it carries out its responsibilities in accordance with international standards, while providing education to citizens so that they can identify correct measurements and claim their rights when making purchases.
Simba said the move is part of efforts to ensure Tanzania produces quality products that can compete with products from other countries, which will help promote trade and increase opportunities for local producers.
