Sudan’s Burhan says he wrote to Trump on peace efforts

Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said on Thursday he had written to U.S. President Donald Trump to reaffirm his government’s commitment to Washington’s efforts to end the war.

Burhan, who chairs Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, said the government is ready to work with all parties towards a settlement that preserves the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“I wrote to President Donald Trump reaffirming Sudan’s commitment to U.S. peace efforts,” Burhan said in a post on X.

“The Government of Sudan is ready to work in good faith with all parties for a just, lasting peace that safeguards our sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and our people’s dignity,” he added.

Burhan did not disclose details of the letter or outline specific proposals for ending the conflict.

The statement comes amid tensions between Washington and Sudan’s military leadership over efforts to secure a ceasefire. In September, the United States withheld a visa for Burhan ahead of the U.N. General Assembly, according to reports at the time, amid diplomatic efforts to advance a proposed ceasefire.

On October 13, U.S. Representative Jim Baird introduced legislation proposing an agricultural and minerals partnership between the United States and Sudan, linking potential cooperation to progress in civilian protection and political stability.

The developments come as Sudan remains engulfed in a war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced millions and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis.

U.S. senior adviser Massad Boulos condemned a drone strike on October 9 that killed at least 12 civilians in En-Nuhud, in West Kordofan state.
