Carnarvon Regional Court Sentences Son to 20 Years for Rape of Mother in Northern Cape

NORTHERN CAPE – The Carnarvon Regional Court in the Northern Cape has sentenced a 22-year-old man to 20 years’ direct imprisonment for the rape of his 42-year-old mother at their Carnarvon residence on 23 November 2025.

According to court proceedings, the assault occurred while the victim was asleep. Upon realizing the perpetrator was her son, she screamed and confronted him, prompting the accused to immediately cease his actions. The victim then alerted her husband, after which the accused fled the residence.

Following a formal police report, Detective Constable Leevirne Nathalie Raaf of the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit was allocated the case for further investigation. A thorough investigative process, culminating in forensic DNA analysis, definitively linked the accused to the crime scene and led to his subsequent arrest.

Throughout multiple court appearances, Detective Constable Raaf successfully opposed the accused’s bail applications, ensuring he remained in custody pending trial.

On Friday, 28 August 2026, the Carnarvon Regional Court found the accused guilty of rape. In addition to the 20-year prison sentence, the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders and officially declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Major General Nomana Mtukushe, District Commissioner of the Pixley ka Seme District, commended Detective Constable Raaf for her dedication and meticulous investigative work. Major General Mtukushe noted that this diligent police work was instrumental in securing the conviction and the substantial sentence, delivering accountability in a severe case of familial violence.
