Why Phoko is parting ways with Siwelele

A goalkeeper who dazzled at the Africa Cup of Nations finds himself, four months later, quietly edging toward the exit in Bloemfontein.

The arc of a footballer’s fortunes can bend in the space of a single summer. For Goitseone Phoko, the Botswana international goalkeeper, it has bent sharply – and in the wrong direction.

Barely four months after he put pen to a two-year contract with the South African club Siwelele FC, Phoko is now negotiating his way back out the door. The 32-year-old arrived in June carrying the glow of a breakout continental performance and the quiet confidence of a man who had earned his chance. He leaves – if the reports from South Africa hold – carrying little more than a handful of appearances and a cautionary tale about how swiftly football can turn its back.

Soccer Laduma, the South African outlet that first confirmed the imminent split, reports that an exit is close at hand. What had looked, on signing day, like the natural next step for an experienced shot-stopper has curdled into something closer to a quiet retreat.

At the heart of the unraveling, according to sources close to the club, is a familiar footballing truth: a player is often only as secure as the coach who believed in him. The man who signed Phoko, Lehlohonolo Seema, is no longer in the dugout.

“He was signed by coach Lehlohonolo Seema, so when Seema left his position (as head coach) and deployed to Diski Challenges as the head coach, it made things difficult for Phoko. It’s over for him there,” sources stated.

Seema’s departure seems to have knocked the goalkeeper loose from his moorings. Phoko had landed in Bloemfontein with genuine pedigree – international caps, a reputation burnished by his displays for Botswana – yet the change at the top left him marooned on the margins, a specialist suddenly surplus to a new manager’s vision.

For a brief spell, it had all seemed to be going to plan. Phoko opened his account at Siwelele with regular minutes, starting the club’s first three league matches in August. But the ledger was unkind. Across those three outings he conceded five goals – a 2-2 draw with TS Galaxy, a 1-0 loss to Milford, and a 2-0 defeat to AmaZulu – and has not featured since. The silence that followed has been deafening, and it has done little to quiet the questions about his future.

The separation, by most accounts, is being handled amicably. It has been described as mutual, with an official announcement expected once the discussions are wrapped up. But the diplomatic language cannot fully mask the disappointment at the core of the story: a move that began with so much promise is ending almost before it began.

AFCON heroics earned him the move

To understand the deflation now, one has to rewind to the exhilaration earlier in the year – to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals, where Phoko announced himself to a continental audience.

Botswana’s campaign was, by any measure, a difficult one. But in the Zebras’ opening fixture against Senegal, Phoko did not merely participate; he resisted. The West African giants ran out 3-0 winners, yet the scoreline flattered them. Had it not been for the Botswana goalkeeper, the margin might have been embarrassing.

Phoko spent the afternoon as a one-man blockade. He frustrated Senegal’s forwards again and again, denying Sadio Mane on multiple occasions and smothering Nicolas Jackson’s bid for a hat-trick. By the final whistle he had amassed 14 saves and 13 possession recoveries – numbers that read less like a goalkeeper’s stat line and more like a testament to sheer endurance against a side brimming with attacking firepower.

The Zebras lost. Phoko, somehow, won – at least in the court of reputation. That performance carried his name beyond Botswana’s borders and, in June, carried him to Siwelele. The transfer offered a tantalizing proposition: a stage in South African football on which to sharpen his international credentials and prove the AFCON heroics were no accident.

Instead, the stage went dark. His minutes dried up, and now, four months on, he faces the prospect of yet another move.

Still, at 32, Phoko is no spent force. He brings the composure of a man tested at the highest level of African competition and the temperament to perform when the pressure mounts. An early departure, uncomfortable as it is, could prove a blessing; a route to a club where regular football is on offer and where he can protect his standing in the national-team setup.

For now, though, the immediate task is narrow: close out the negotiations with Siwelele. With the parting described as mutual, the next beat in the story will be the formal announcement confirming the end of this short, strange chapter. What opened as a fresh dawn after his AFCON exploits may close just as abruptly as it began – leaving Phoko to survey the horizon once more, and to plot the revival of a club career that has, for the moment, stalled.
