Former Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) official Mpesi is in trouble after being accused of misusing K9 million in public funds to pay school fees for his children.
The Lilongwe Magistrate Court has charged four MEC officials with two counts of misuse of public office.
The court heard that in July 2026, Mpesi, together with two other MEC officials, allegedly used K9 million from the commission to settle school fees for Mpesi’s children.
Prosecutors allege that the officials knew Mpesi had resigned from MEC and was serving his notice when the payment was made.
In a separate charge, MEC Deputy Chief Elections Officer responsible for Finance and Administration, Andrew Kamkhwalala, is accused of misusing K33 million in MEC funds to pay allowances for two officers who travelled to Dubai in July 2025.
The accused persons, through their lawyer Chrispin Ndalama, are currently applying for bail.
The defence has also asked the court to order that Mpesi should not face further arrests in connection with related matters.
The matter is before the Lilongwe Magistrate Court.
