Personality of the week: Goliath determined to make his mark after milestone
From playing football in Windhoek’s streets to becoming the youngest player named in an African Stars CAF Champions League squad, Nathan Goliath is determined to turn his promise into a successful career.Left winger Goliath’s football began as a childhood pastime in the streets of Windhoek, where he played with friends until the streetlights came on. Today, the young footballer is setting his sights on Europe after reaching a significant milestone at club level.
Goliath made history by becoming the youngest Namibian player to feature in a squad for the CAF Champions League when African Stars faced AS Manga Sport of Gabon in their preliminary-round encounter in South Africa.
The experience was a confidence boost for the youngster, who has since been determined to work harder while remaining focused on his development.
“I had only realised when one of my teammates told me that I made history by being the youngest player to feature in the squad so it’s really a good confidence booster for me and my football, but at the same time, I have to stay grounded and keep pushing and working harder to continue making more history,” he said.
Foundation built on family
Goliath’s love for football was nurtured by his grandfather, Jories Afrikaner, a former Orlando Pirates player who introduced him to the game.
Afrikaner played an influential role in developing his grandson’s abilities, teaching him the fundamentals of the sport through backyard sessions that focused on passing, shooting and improving the smaller details of his game.
Goliath began playing organised football at primary school before joining the Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) academy at around nine years old. He spent seven years at the academy, progressing through the Liquifruit development league and the MTC Hopsol Youth League structures before joining the African Stars Academy in 2026.
His performances earned him promotion to the senior team, while his development has also included international tournament exposure at the Kapstadt Cup and the MADCUP in Madrid, Spain.
At the 2025 MTC Hopsol competition, he finished as top goalscorer, adding to his recognition as SKW’s Players’ Player of the Year that same year.
His achievements also include being named Player of the Year at Windhoek High School in 2025, representing the Khomas regional team in 2025 and 2026 and receiving a call-up to the Namibia U/20 national team this year.
Learning and improving
He describes himself as a quick, direct player who uses his pace and agility to beat opponents. Comfortable with either foot, he prefers operating on the left, where he can cut inside to create shooting opportunities.
However, he understands that talent alone will not guarantee success at senior level.
Goliath is working to improve his longer diagonal passes, particularly those used to switch play and initiate attacking transitions. A match against Mamelodi Sundowns’ U/16 side at the 2024 Kapstadt Cup also taught him the importance of moving the ball quickly against stronger opposition.
His experience with African Stars has brought a new level of responsibility, but he remains determined to improve without allowing early recognition to distract him.
“I always knew that I was a good footballer and it was just for me to stay grounded and level-headed with everyone else,” he said. Balancing football with education is another priority. Still a high school student, Goliath relies on time management and a structured timetable to ensure that his academic commitments do not suffer as he pursues his sporting ambitions.
Setting his sights abroad
Goliath hopes to secure an opportunity to play professional football in Europe, where he believes, he can continue developing and establish himself at a higher level.
While Lionel Messi is among the players he admires for his all-round ability, Goliath also looks up to Willy Stefanus, whose Namibian roots and experience playing abroad make him an inspiration.
For now, the young winger remains focused on making the most of every opportunity at African Stars, improving his game and completing his education as he works towards turning his European dream into reality.
