Oyo Warns Residents Of Extreme Heat, Urges Water Conservation As Dry Season Begins

The Oyo State Government has urged residents to take precautions against extreme heat, conserve water and adopt other preventive measures as the state transitions from the rainy season to the dry season.

The advisory was issued by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, following forecasts indicating the possibility of prolonged dry conditions and higher-than-normal temperatures, potentially influenced by global warming and El Niño-related weather patterns.

Aderinto said that although high temperatures were common during the dry season, the anticipated weather conditions required residents to take additional precautions to protect their health, conserve water and minimise the effects of excessive heat.

He advised residents to drink water regularly, ensure proper ventilation in their homes and workplaces, and plant trees to provide shade and help reduce surrounding temperatures.

The commissioner also stressed the need for responsible water management, urging households and businesses to avoid wastage, use available water efficiently and store reasonable quantities for future use where necessary.

On the health risks associated with rising temperatures, Aderinto warned residents against heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

He advised them to wear light, breathable clothing, remain in well-ventilated environments and seek shade or cooler locations during periods of intense heat.

The commissioner also urged employers and workers in poorly ventilated workplaces without adequate cooling facilities to prioritise their health by taking regular breaks in cooler areas.

He recommended that strenuous outdoor activities should, where practicable, be scheduled for cooler hours of the day to reduce exposure to excessive heat.

Aderinto cautioned residents against ignoring symptoms of heat-related illnesses, including dizziness, headaches, weakness, nausea and excessive sweating.

He stressed that suspected heatstroke should be treated as a medical emergency requiring immediate medical attention.

The state government called on residents, business owners, employers and community leaders to take the advisory seriously and implement the recommended measures to reduce the health and environmental risks associated with the approaching dry season.
