France Test-Fires New Nuclear-Capable M51 Missile as Macron Watches From Navy Frigate

France has carried out a test launch of the latest version of its M51 strategic ballistic missile, according to a report by AFP citing the French presidency and Defense Ministry.

The missile was launched from a submarine without a nuclear warhead as part of a test of France’s sea-based strategic weapons capability.

French President Emmanuel Macron observed the operation from a French Navy frigate, according to the news agency.

Missile Launched Without Nuclear Warhead

The weapon involved in the test was identified as the third version of France’s M51 strategic sea-launched ballistic missile.

Although the M51 is designed to be capable of carrying nuclear weapons, French authorities said the missile used during the test was not equipped with a nuclear warhead.

The exercise therefore involved the missile delivery system rather than an operational nuclear detonation.

Test Missile Lands in North Atlantic

According to the French Defense Ministry, the missile completed its flight in the North Atlantic.

Authorities said its impact area was located hundreds of kilometres from any coastline.

No further information about the precise launch or impact locations was included in the supplied report.

Macron Observes Test From French Navy Frigate

Macron personally observed the test while aboard a French Navy frigate, AFP reported.

His presence came as France continues to maintain an independent nuclear deterrent as a central element of its national defense strategy.

The report did not provide additional details about Macron’s activities aboard the vessel or any comments he made immediately following the launch.

Latest M51 Version Entered Service Last Year

The missile tested by the French military represents the third version of the M51.

According to AFP, that version entered operational service approximately one year before the latest test.

The M51 family forms part of France’s submarine-based strategic missile capability, providing the country with a sea-launched platform capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

Test Highlights France’s Sea-Based Strategic Capability

The latest launch demonstrates continued testing of the missile system used to support France’s strategic deterrence.

While the missile itself is nuclear-capable, French officials emphasized that no nuclear warhead was carried during the exercise.

The test concluded with the missile reaching its designated area in the North Atlantic, according to the French Defense Ministry, with authorities stating that the location was safely separated from surrounding coastlines.
