Uzoho bids farewell after Omonia switch

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, has left Omonia Nicosia to join fellow Cypriot First Division side, Omonia 29is Maiou, bringing an end to a five-year spell with his former club.

Uzoho, who confirmed his departure on Saturday, shared an emotional farewell message thanking everyone connected to Omonia, particularly the supporters, for their love and support during his time there.

“What a journey it has been for me with this badge on my chest, filled with so many memories. It was a privilege to represent this prestigious club,” Uzoho wrote on Instagram.

“A heartfelt thank you to the fans; the affection you have shown me from day one until my last day will always be cherished. I’d hate to say goodbye, but it’s not in my hands. I will always love this club. Goodbye.”

The 27-year-old first joined Omonia on loan from Deportivo La Coruña in July 2019, before returning to the club on a permanent deal in the summer of 2021. He leaves after making 77 appearances across all competitions, conceding 84 goals and keeping 29 clean sheets.

Uzoho, who had been playing second choice to Fabiano at Omonia, was told he could leave before the close of the summer transfer window, shortly after the club progressed to the group stages of the Europa League.

He was courted by three Cypriot clubs before settling on early-season table-toppers, Omonia 29is Maiou.

He is expected to become the team’s first-choice goalkeeper, with his experience in the Cypriot league giving him an advantage over rivals for the position. Although the duration of the deal was not disclosed, sources indicate it is a three-year contract with the option of a further year, subject to his performance in the opening seasons.

Uzoho was part of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets squad that won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2013.
