Initiative-taking Transparency: Addressing institutional hurdles in Malawi’s 2026 Miss World Journey

By Rick Dzida

The participation of Ireen Navicha at the 75th Miss World Festival was meant to excitedly mark Malawi’s return to the international pageant circuit after a 14-year absence.

While Ireen demonstrated strong individual competence, yes, she tried her best, particularly during the Head-to-Head Challenge, she even reached the Top 40, her failure to succeed further was the direct result of systemic institutional failures, public relations mismanagement, and a fractured domestic support base.

An analytical breakdown of the campaign reveals that the Miss Malawi Organisation’s decision to bypass reigning queen Thandie Chisi created a severe deficit in public trust.

Organizers cited Thandie’s age, 27, as a major disqualifying factor for the international stage. However, this justification was empirically invalidated when South Africa’s 27-year-old delegate, Romanda Hombir, clinical audiologist, and motivational speaker advanced to the Top 6.

The perception of political favouritism—stemming from Ireen’s status as the daughter of a Cabinet Minister, Mary Navicha, alienated the Malawian public.

In modern international pageantry, digital public voting is a critical metric for preliminary advancement. In fact, representing the East African nation, Eritrea Snit Habteab, a neuroscientist, educator, and disability rights advocate; she scooped the most votes that propelled her into the top six.

By alienating the domestic populace, the organisation inadvertently triggered a voting boycott, depriving Ireen of the statistical leverage required to proceed further to Top 20

Furthermore, the campaign suffered from aesthetic and operational missteps, notably a cultural costume that originally failed to utilize the national flag colours or distinct Malawian cultural motifs, compounding the campaign’s lack of national identity. However, later, Ireen improved on this arena.

To mitigate future operational risks and restore the integrity of the national franchise, the Miss Malawi organising body must implement structural reforms across governance, public relations, and talent development.

First, the Miss Malawi Organisation should cede unilateral selection power to an independent governing board comprising representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Wildlife, corporate sponsors, and civil society. This board must audit all selection processes to eliminate nepotism and political interference. In fact, the mobilisation of funds should not undermine fairness. Get this!!!

Second, all rules, including age limits, contractual obligations, and contingency plans for runner-up substitutions, must be legally codified and made accessible to the public.

If an eligibility conflict arises, third-party legal counsel should verify the disqualification before a substitute is named.

Third, in scenarios where a runner-up must replace a primary winner, the organisation must hold a transparent, televised press conference detailing the exact legal and logistical reasons for the change.

Initiative-taking transparency is essential to retain the public goodwill necessary for subsequent voting campaigns.

Fourth, future campaigns must treat national digital voting as a structured political marketing drive. The organisation should partner with local telecommunications firms to subsidise voting data costs and run nationwide civic pride campaigns to maximise digital engagement.

Fifth, the selection of international competition attire should not be left to a single designer. A panel consisting of local fashion historians, cultural experts, and veteran designers should oversee the creation of the national costume.

Sixth, the organisation must invest in elite, international pageant coaches to train delegates in global stage mechanics, strategic media relations, and interview formulation well ahead of the competition.

Seventh, national winners should undergo a mandatory, multi-month preparatory camp focusing on project management for the “Beauty with a Purpose” segment, ensuring their philanthropic presentations align precisely with international judging criteria.

Overall, regardless of Ireen Navicha being a daughter to Mary Navicha, the Cabinet Minister, it is my view that she well represented Malawi at the Miss World beauty contest in Vietnam.

With the exposure she has gained, the sky is not the limit for Ireen. Most importantly, it will be a cordial welcome for Ireen when her former school, Maranatha Academy will present her with special honours. This must be a wake-up call for the schools to follow the progress of their former students.

Finally, as an analyst, I assert that that there is always one winner in a contest. Congratulations to Dominic Republic representative, Joheirry Mola for being crowned 2026 Miss World.
