First-year PhD students at Hassan I University of Settat have denounced being removed from the university and blocked from registering for a second year, with some saying they were also asked to pay fees retroactively.
In a statement, the students, who were enrolled for the 2025-2026 academic year, said they had completed a full year of study, training and research while complying with the enrollment requirements and procedures in place at the time.
They argued that changing enrollment requirements or introducing new financial obligations after the academic year had ended should not result in the loss of a year of study or prevent them from continuing their academic careers.
The students described the situation as an infringement of their academic rights and called on the university presidency and relevant authorities to intervene urgently, reopen the online registration platform and allow them to enroll for their second year.
They also called for their administrative status to be resolved without forcing them to lose a year of study, training and research.
According to the students, they have pursued several institutional, administrative and legal channels in an effort to resolve the dispute through dialogue and existing procedures.
Their efforts include a letter to the president of Hassan I University dated April 17, correspondence with Morocco’s Ombudsman Institution in July, a formal complaint filed through a judicial officer on July 31, and a letter to the Ministry of Higher Education.
The students also said they sent a legal notice through a lawyer on Aug. 12 seeking a resolution, followed by another complaint to the Ombudsman Institution through their lawyer on Aug. 17.
The students are calling for an urgent resolution that would allow them to resume their studies without losing the academic year they have already completed.
