Hosts Morocco began their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with an emphatic 4-0 victory over New Zealand at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat on Saturday.
The Atlas Lionesses scored all four goals in the second half to delight their home supporters after a frustrating opening period in which New Zealand goalkeeper Nienke Holland produced several important saves.
Morocco dominated possession and created numerous chances but struggled to break down New Zealand’s defence before Sonia Abajiou headed home the opener in the 57th minute.
Abajiou’s goal opened the floodgates, with New Zealand’s Eden Chaytor turning the ball into her own net in the 70th minute to double the hosts’ advantage.
Substitute Imane Dhissi added a third in the 76th minute with a deflected effort before Hiba Youssoufi converted a penalty six minutes later to complete the rout.
New Zealand had held firm for much of the first half, with Holland commanding her area and keeping Morocco at bay. However, the hosts’ attacking pressure eventually told after the break.
Youssoufi was named Player of the Match following her contribution to Morocco’s impressive performance.
The victory gives Morocco a strong start to their Group A campaign as they seek to make the most of home advantage at the tournament.
