Two Field Rangers Among Three Summoned for Illegal Hunting of Endangered Species in Tolwe

LIMPOPO — Law enforcement authorities are intensifying efforts to combat the illegal hunting of endangered species after three suspects, including two field rangers, were summoned to appear in court within the Tolwe policing area. The individuals face severe charges of fraud, corruption, and environmental violations linked to a sophisticated, high-value wildlife poaching syndicate.

According to a spokesperson for the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, the crackdown follows an intensive investigation into a syndicate accused of exploiting their positions to facilitate the unlawful capturing and transport of highly protected wildlife.

A R4 Million Helicopter Poaching Operation

The charges stem from a series of alleged incidents that took place on May 25 and 26, 2023. Authorities report that the suspects jointly and unlawfully generated a fraudulent hunting permit under the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).

A spokesperson for the DFFE confirmed that a 41-year-old male community member allegedly traveled to a SANParks Nature Reserve to hunt and capture endangered wild animals. He was reportedly assisted in this illicit operation by two field rangers stationed at the reserve, aged 40 and 62.

During the capturing operation, the trio—alongside four additional male accomplices—allegedly utilized a helicopter to dart the endangered species. The poached wildlife is valued at more than R4,000,000. The animals were subsequently loaded into a truck and transported to unknown locations.

Escalation to the Anti-Corruption Unit

Following the discovery of the fraudulent permit, the matter was initially reported to the DFFE. Due to the severity and complexity of the environmental and corruption offenses, the case was escalated to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for a comprehensive investigation.

After concluding their intensive probe, investigators referred the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The DPP authorized the issuance of summonses for all seven male suspects involved in the commission of the crime.

Court Appearances and Outstanding Suspects

On Friday, September 18, 2026, members of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, alongside DFFE officials, descended on the Tolwe policing area to trace and serve summonses on three of the primary suspects.

The three men—comprising the two field rangers and the 41-year-old community member—are expected to appear before the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. They will face formal charges of fraud, corruption, and the Contravention of the Environmental Act.

Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains active. The outstanding four suspects are currently being traced by law enforcement and will be served with summonses to appear in court to face the exact same charges.
