“So This Person Who’s Wearing An ANC T-shirt, Who’s Carrying A Big ANC Title Is Not ANC” Mbeki Says

Former President Thabo Mbeki has raised serious concerns about what he describes as the infiltration of the African National Congress (ANC) by individuals allegedly working against the organisation’s founding principles and revolutionary objectives.

In a strongly worded statement, Mbeki questioned whether everyone in influential positions within the ANC genuinely represents the party’s values. He argued that wearing the party’s colours or holding a senior title does not automatically make someone a committed member.

> “So this person who’s wearing an ANC T-shirt, who’s carrying a big ANC title is not ANC. It’s a person who was infiltrated by the old order into the ANC and their task is to repeat what their handlers tell them to repeat.”

The remarks reflect Mbeki’s long-standing belief that the apartheid government did not fully abandon its strategic interests after 1994. He has repeatedly argued that elements of the former regime sought to place individuals within liberation movements and key institutions.

According to Mbeki, apartheid-era intelligence networks also targeted organised labour, academia, business, the media and wider civil society. He has further acknowledged that the ANC’s efforts to identify and remove suspected agents were not entirely successful.

The comments come at a difficult time for the ANC, which has faced declining electoral support, internal disagreements and growing public dissatisfaction with governance. Mbeki’s intervention has renewed debate about the party’s ideological direction and leadership accountability.

It is important to note that Mbeki’s claims are political interpretations rather than independently established findings. His assertions about apartheid-era agents remain matters of debate and would require evidence when applied to specific individuals.

Mbeki’s core message is that the ANC should assess its members’ loyalty by whether they genuinely advance the organisation’s objectives, rather than by their positions or public appearances.

Do you think the ANC needs to examine the loyalty of its leaders more closely?
