Pension Funds Plans $200m Infrastructure Investment
The Nigerian infrastructure sector is set to get a boost as fresh investment totaling $250 million will be pumped into the sector, with $200 million of the funds coming from pension operators.
This was disclosed by the director general of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran, in Lagos on Tuesday.
According to her, the pension industry will commit $200 million to infrastructure investment over the next 10 years, while $50 million would come from development finance institutions.
Oloworaran said the commitment marked the first time Nigeria’s pension industry would jointly commit its funds to infrastructure, describing it as the beginning of a broader investment drive.
“For the first time, Nigeria’s pension industry has jointly committed its own funds to infrastructure. The council has endorsed the first launch of a $250 million pension industry infrastructure investment.
“$200 million from pension fund operators as arrears invested through cash holds over the next 10 years, and a further $50 million from development finance institutions with whom discussions are ongoing. So that’s a total of $250 million commitment.”
She said the commitment would grow as more sound investment opportunities emerged, stressing that the interests of pension contributors would remain central to the deployment of the funds.
“Now this is the beginning. It is not the end. As sound opportunities grow, so will this commitment,” she said.
According to the PenCom boss, the infrastructure investment would be driven by the twin objectives of providing productive investment for the Nigerian economy and securing returns for pension contributors.
“Nigeria needs productive investment. Contributors need secure returns. We will serve both through rigorous project selection and uncompromising protection of contributors’ interests,” she said.
Oloworaran also disclosed that pension assets had risen from N20.79 trillion in July 2024 to N31.48 trillion in July 2026, representing more than N10.7 trillion in new retirement wealth. She added that 938,229 Nigerians joined the Contributory Pension Scheme within the same period.
According to her, pension funds are increasingly being diversified into investments in Nigeria and real assets as the industry seeks to improve retirement outcomes for contributors.
“Every naira invested well at home strengthens two futures at once: the retirees’ future and the nation at large,” she added.
The PenCom DG said the commission would ensure that the infrastructure investments were subjected to rigorous project selection while protecting contributors’ interests.
She said the infrastructure commitment was part of broader measures to reposition the pension industry and ensure that pension savings contribute to long-term economic development.
