Kyaggwe joins the table of men in Masaza Cup

For years, Kyaggwe were familiar faces in the latter stages of the Masaza Cup but the ultimate prize remained elusive.

On Saturday, October 31, at Muteesa II stadium, Wankulukuku, they finally turned their persistence into history, defeating five-time champions Gomba 1-0 to lift their maiden title.

The victory ended Kyaggwe’s long wait and elevated them into the prestigious group of Masaza Cup champions, taking the number of counties that have won the tournament to 11.

They became the latest addition to a list that includes Buweekula, Busiro, Buluuli, Kyaddondo and Kkooki, among others. Mawogola, Bugerere, Butambala, Buvuma, Ssese, Busujju and Kabula remain in pursuit of their first titles.

Kyaggwe’s triumph was built on persistence and lessons from previous disappointments. Having lost the 2024 final 1-0 to Buddu at Namboole, they reached the semi-finals in 2025 but were eliminated by eventual champions Buweekula on penalties at Bishop SS Mukono grounds.

This time, they topped their group with 23 points before eliminating Mawogola 5-2 on aggregate in the quarter-finals. They then edged Bugerere 1-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals to book another final appearance.

Their breakthrough came through Kato George Isingoma, who stepped off the bench to replace captain Ronnie Ziraba before combining brilliantly with David Mugalu. He eventually scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute.

Godfrey Alijole, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, was among the standout performers. He also became a two-time champion, having previously won with Busiro in 2023.

Beyond the football, the tournament continued to demonstrate its commercial and community appeal, with Centenary Bank reaffirming its commitment as one of the key sponsors.

The bank contributed Shs 200 million towards the 2026 competition, supporting its organisation and enhancing the experience for players and supporters. It also awarded tournament top scorer Mohamed Kasule Shs 1 million.

Centenary Bank managing director Godfrey Byekwaso said the tournament provides an important platform for nurturing young talent, promoting unity and preserving Buganda’s cultural heritage.

The bank has supported the Masaza Cup for more than 12 years. Its wider partnership with the Kingdom of Buganda also covers initiatives such as the Kabaka Birthday Run, CBS Kaliisoliiso Dinner and engagements with the Buganda Land Board.

With 104 matches played during the 2026 edition, Kyaggwe’s historic achievement provided a fitting climax to a competition that continues to unite communities, showcase emerging football talent and strengthen Buganda’s sporting identity
