Since his assumption of office as president and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Ahmed Tinubu have routinely met with his Service Chiefs. In some of such meetings, he issued orders concerning the security situation in the country. The routine presidential directives to the Service Chiefs reminds me of the words of General George Patton who commanded the United States Seventh Army of the Mediterranean theater of world war II: “Don’t tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results.” Shortly after taking office, President Tinubu held his first meeting with the Service Chiefs and directed them to checkmate the activities of terror groups. The then Service Chiefs was led by then-Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor to the meeting. Also in the meeting was the then Inspector-General of Police and intelligence agency heads. Unfortunately, however, the president’s series of engagements with Service Chiefs and his directives to them , according to security experts and analysts, have not yielded the desired result as the blood-chilling mayhems of terrorists operating in different parts of the country continue unabated.Recently, apparently desirous of terror-free elections next year, the President gave another marching order to the Service Chiefs to relocate to the different theatres of the war on terrorism and the order was promptly complied with. It is obvious that the 2027 elections mean so much to Mr. President hence he is putting everything in place, including conducive security environment, for a successful exercises . In his recent meeting with the Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Tinubu directed the military and other security heads to ensure the rescue of all abducted persons nationwide. He also charged them to dismantle all terrorists’ enclaves, directing that no terrorists’ or bandits’ camp should remain active in the country. Following the presidential directive, the Chief of Army Staff,Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu relocated to the Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri to oversee operations in the Borno axis of the war on terror. It is a sad irony and unsettling commentary that the Nigerian Army that constituted the bulk of the ECOMOG military contingent that freed Liberian and Sierra Leone from the clutches of rebel forces is now struggling to end terrorism in Nigeria. It is also the Nigerian Army that I witnessed its superlative operational achievements in Haiti under the auspices of the Nigerian United Nations Peace keeping force. Indeed, across the globe, the Nigerian Army has performed creditably well under the banner of the UN peace keeping operations. The question now is, why is the same Army finding it difficult to defeat a rag-tag force of a few thousand armed terrorists?Or is there something we are not being told? More worrisome is the inability of the Nigerian military intelligence arm and the secret Police, the DSS to nib the activities of Boko Haram in the bud before it started developing wings and gave birth to the numberous other terrorist groups groups now holding the country by the jugular. I believe if Tinubu’s presidential order to the Service Chiefs to decimate the terrorists once and for all is carried out to the latter, with a short time, insecurity will be a thing of the past in the country. Therefore, those presidential orders must not be viewed from the prism of mere sloganeering of a civilian president. It must be seen as an order from a Commander- in-Chief with constitutional powers to stamp out terrorists from the country. When a disturb father issues an order to his children, it is expected that they obey and carry out the ordee without blinking an eye. That is what Nigerians expect from the military. As the 2027 elections inch close, I urge Nigerians, opposition political parties inclusive, to put politics aside, drop the notion that the party in power has an ulterior motives and rally round the President and the military to defeat undesirable element bent on holding our country down via terrorism. I’m optimistic that terrorism is defeatable. All we need do is to be vigilant and support government’s noble efforts towards achieving total victory against the terrorists. As the saying goes in the defunct Biafra during the civil war: “He who is surrounded by enemies is always watchful and vigilant”, so every Nigerian should be watchful and vigilant, especially during the elections. 2027 elections Security hints: The success or otherwise of the 2027 election is in the hands of every voter. so If you notice any activity or activities likely to undermine the credibility of the coming elections, contact the following security agencies via their phone numbers listed below: 1.
