The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is expected to invite a nurse for further engagement next week over a controversial TikTok livestream allegedly showing a pregnant patient in distress.
The incident has raised concerns about patient confidentiality, professional ethics and the protection of vulnerable people receiving medical care.
The Ministry of Health was alerted to the matter after a social media user raised concerns about the livestream.
The Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Tony Goodman, announced the Council’s planned action in a Facebook post on Friday, October 6, indicating that the nurse would be invited for further discussions.
“The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is following up on the matter concerning this nurse. I am reliably informed that she is expected to be invited by the Council next week for further engagement,” he wrote.
A Facebook user, Dickson Assan, who reported the incident to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), said he encountered the TikTok Live session in the early hours of the day and was disturbed by its content.
According to his account, the person hosting the livestream, who appeared to be a nurse, was broadcasting a pregnant patient who seemed to be in considerable distress.
He alleged that the host was seen rubbing the patient’s back, apparently in an attempt to comfort her, while some viewers responded with inappropriate remarks and ridicule.
Assan further claimed that when a viewer questioned the decision to broadcast the patient’s condition, the person was insulted by other participants.
He also alleged that the host displayed a Mobile Money (MoMo) number during the livestream and appealed for financial contributions while the patient was in distress.
The Facebook user questioned why a healthcare worker would expose a vulnerable patient’s condition on social media rather than safeguard her privacy and dignity.
