“I’ve always known myself as half Nigerian, half Jamaican, only to discover I’m 48% Igbo” – BBNaija star Mike Edwards reveals DNA test results
Former Big Brother Naija housemate Mike Edwards has expressed surprise after a DNA ancestry test revealed that he has 48% Igbo and 30% Yoruba ancestry.
Sharing the results on Instagram, Mike explained that he had always identified as half Nigerian and half Jamaican because his mother has Yoruba roots through his Nigerian grandmother, while his father was born in Jamaica.
However, after taking an AncestryDNA test, he discovered that his Nigerian ancestry accounted for 78% of his genetic background.
“I’ve ALWAYS known about my mum’s Yoruba heritage, but NEVER imagined my dad’s Jamaican roots could have such a strong connection to Igboland, Nigeria!” he wrote.
Mike said one of the most special moments was sharing the discovery with his father, who had always felt connected to Africa.
He explained that the discovery meant more to him than percentages or ethnic identities, describing it as an opportunity to reconnect with his family’s history.
Despite the results, Mike maintained that he remains a proud Yoruba man while joking that his Igbo ancestors had been waiting for their introduction.
“NOW ABEG, MY IGBO BROTHERS AND SISTERS… I NEED AN IGBO NAME!! What name are we giving me, and what does it mean? IGBO KWENU!!!” he added.
