Cape Town hosts first K9 competition for public safety teams

The City of Cape Town’s Public Safety Training College has hosted its first K9 competition, bringing together canine teams from different agencies to showcase their skills and strengthen partnerships.
The competition took place on Saturday, 17 October, with participants from the City’s Metro Police K9 unit, the Stellenbosch K9 unit and SANParks.
A total of 15 K9 participants and their handlers took part in activities designed to demonstrate their obedience, detection, protection work and ability to carry out controlled operational exercises.
According to the City, the competition aims to highlight the role of K9 units in public safety while providing an opportunity for handlers and their canine partners to demonstrate their discipline, teamwork and operational readiness.
The event also created a platform for participating agencies to strengthen relationships, share knowledge and promote best practices in K9 training and operational deployment.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, said the competition was about more than identifying the best-performing dog or handler.
‘This competition offers an opportunity to establish a tradition of excellence, strengthen partnerships between agencies and recognise the valuable contribution of K9 teams to community safety,‘ Smith said.
He added that the event celebrated teamwork, discipline and dedication, as well as the role K9 units play in keeping communities safe.
Smith also praised the City’s Public Safety Training College for organising the event and expressed his hope that the competition would become an annual fixture.
