English referee Peter Bankes has been appointed to officiate the Premier League clash between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, 2026, placing his record and previous big-game decisions under the spotlight.

The appointment was confirmed by the Premier League on October 26, with Gary Beswick and Blake Antrobus named as assistant referees. Paul Tierney will serve as the fourth official, while James Bell will operate as VAR, assisted by Tim Wood.

The fixture brings together two of English football’s biggest clubs in a match where decisions involving penalties, red cards and physical challenges could prove significant.

Bankes, who became a Premier League referee in 2019, has officiated numerous high-profile encounters. Although his appointments include routine league fixtures, several matches involving Manchester United and Chelsea have attracted considerable attention because of contentious refereeing decisions.

One of Bankes’ most discussed recent decisions involving Manchester United came during their Premier League meeting with Bournemouth in the 2024/25 season.

Bankes sent off Bournemouth striker Evanilson after a challenge involving United defender Noussair Mazraoui. The decision attracted criticism because replays suggested Evanilson had slipped into the challenge rather than deliberately committing a dangerous foul.

The dismissal was subsequently overturned following an independent review, intensifying questions about the original decision and the use of VAR in assessing serious foul play.

Manchester United went on to score a late equaliser in the match, adding to the debate surrounding the incident and its potential influence on the result.

The episode remains one of the most prominent examples of a Bankes decision attracting scrutiny in a match involving the Red Devils.

Another significant incident occurred in February 2022 when Manchester United faced Brighton in the Premier League.

Bankes initially showed Brighton captain Lewis Dunk a yellow card following a challenge, but the decision was upgraded to a red card after a VAR review.

The incident sparked protests from Brighton players and contributed to the debate surrounding the threshold for using video technology to change an on-field decision.

Manchester United won the match 2-0, while the incident also resulted in the Football Association charging the club over its players’ conduct after they surrounded the referee.

The match illustrated the pressure officials face when making disciplinary decisions involving high-profile clubs, particularly when VAR intervention changes the original punishment.

Bankes also came under scrutiny following Manchester United’s shock home defeat to Sheffield United in January 2021.

Former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer criticised key refereeing decisions after the match, which ended in a 2-1 victory for Sheffield United.

The result was significant in the context of the title race, with United losing ground after dropping points at Old Trafford.

The controversy added to Bankes’ profile as a referee whose decisions have occasionally attracted strong reactions from managers and supporters in high-pressure fixtures.

Bankes was the referee when Chelsea defeated Brighton 4-2 at Stamford Bridge on September 28, 2024, in a match remembered for Cole Palmer’s extraordinary performance.

Palmer scored four goals in the first half, becoming the first player in Premier League history to achieve the feat. His goals included a penalty and a free-kick as Chelsea recovered from Brighton’s early opener to secure victory.

The match was not free of controversy. Chelsea were unhappy when Noni Madueke was pulled down by Pervis Estupiñán while appearing to be through on goal, with the Brighton defender receiving a yellow card.

Although the result is chiefly remembered for Palmer’s record-breaking display, the incident illustrates how disciplinary decisions can become a talking point even in matches dominated by attacking football.

Bankes attracted further attention in February 2026 when he officiated Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Leeds United at Elland Road.

City’s Antoine Semenyo scored the decisive goal in first-half stoppage time. However, the closing stages were overshadowed by Leeds manager Daniel Farke’s frustration over the amount of additional time played.

Farke approached Bankes after the final whistle and was sent off. Leeds were also unhappy that a late penalty appeal involving a cross that struck Matheus Nunes on the arm was not awarded.

The incident demonstrated the scrutiny referees face when decisions over stoppage time and handball occur in closely contested matches.

Bankes’ overall Premier League record provides further context ahead of Saturday’s encounter.

According to RefCard’s published database, he has officiated 118 Premier League matches across the period it tracks, averaging 4.03 yellow cards per game. Its figures also show that the independent Key Match Incidents panel reviewed 58 of his matches and recorded 11 confirmed errors.

Those figures require context. The panel’s reviews cover selected matches, and the recorded errors do not establish that Bankes is generally an inaccurate referee. Nor do they show that any particular club has been favoured.

His disciplinary statistics nevertheless suggest that bookings could be a relevant factor in matches featuring persistent fouling, heated exchanges or tactical challenges.

The presence of VAR will be particularly important when reviewing potential penalties, serious foul play and possible red-card incidents that meet the intervention threshold.

Chelsea and Manchester United will enter the encounter knowing that the match officials could face difficult decisions in a high-pressure atmosphere.

Bankes’ past assignments include a controversial red card involving Bournemouth, a VAR-assisted dismissal of Brighton captain Lewis Dunk, Chelsea’s record-breaking win over Brighton and Leeds’ narrow defeat to Manchester City.

These matches demonstrate the range of situations he has encountered, but they do not predetermine how he will handle Saturday’s fixture.

The key issues will be consistency in applying the rules, clear communication with players, appropriate disciplinary action and effective cooperation between the on-field referee and VAR.
