Ghana Battery Network Urges Urgent Investment in Testing Infrastructure for Untested Batteries

The Ghana Battery Network has called for urgent investment in testing infrastructure to address the growing challenge of untested batteries in the country, warning that the lack of adequate testing facilities poses risks to consumers and the environment.

The Network raised concern over the increasing circulation of untested batteries in the market, noting that without proper testing infrastructure, it is difficult to verify the safety, quality and performance of batteries sold to the public. This situation, it warned, exposes consumers to potential hazards and undermines confidence in the battery market.

According to the Network, investment in modern testing facilities is essential to ensure that batteries meet required standards before they reach consumers. It stressed that such infrastructure would enable regulators and industry players to assess the safety and reliability of batteries, thereby protecting public health and the environment.

The call comes amid growing demand for batteries used in various applications, including renewable energy systems, vehicles and electronic devices. The Network noted that as the battery market expands, the need for robust testing capacity becomes even more critical to prevent substandard products from entering the market.

It urged government, industry stakeholders and development partners to prioritise investment in testing infrastructure, describing it as a necessary step toward building a safe and sustainable battery sector. The Network also emphasised the importance of regulation and enforcement to complement the testing infrastructure.

The Ghana Battery Network’s appeal highlights a gap in the country’s ability to ensure the quality and safety of batteries, particularly as the transition to cleaner energy sources drives up demand. Without adequate testing, the risks associated with faulty or unsafe batteries could escalate.

The Network reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for standards and safeguards in the battery sector, calling for collaboration among all stakeholders to address the challenge. It expressed hope that urgent action would be taken to establish the infrastructure needed to protect consumers and support the growth of a reliable battery industry in Ghana.
