No Commercial Vehicles On November 4 As Transport Unions Declare Nationwide Strike

Commuters across Ghana could face major transport difficulties on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, after five commercial transport groups announced plans to withdraw their services nationwide over concerns surrounding the implementation of the TRAFFITECH-GH traffic enforcement system.

The groups have directed commercial drivers not to operate on the day, warning that vehicles will be parked as part of the planned industrial action.

The announcement was contained in a notice dated November 1 and signed by the leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress, Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, True Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers Association and Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.

At the centre of the dispute is the alleged failure of government and the relevant authorities to enforce regulations against trading at designated bus stops and on pedestrian walkways.

The transport operators argue that traders have occupied spaces meant for commercial vehicles to pick up and drop off passengers. They say the situation makes it difficult for drivers to use approved bus stops while still exposing them to penalties under the new digital traffic enforcement system.

The groups have questioned why drivers should face fines when some of the designated spaces they are expected to use are allegedly being occupied by traders.

Their position is that authorities must first address the obstruction of bus stops and pedestrian walkways before expecting commercial drivers to comply fully with the new enforcement arrangements.

TRAFFITECH-GH, introduced by the Ghana Police Service, uses digital technology to identify selected road traffic offences. The system began its operational phase on November 1, 2026, with the aim of improving compliance with traffic regulations.

However, the rollout has generated resistance from transport operators, who believe enforcement should also address the conditions affecting their ability to operate within designated areas.

The November 4 action could affect thousands of commuters who depend on commercial vehicles for their daily movement, including workers, traders, students and other travellers.

The unions have therefore urged the public to take note of the planned withdrawal of services and prepare for possible disruptions.

They have maintained their decision to keep commercial vehicles off the roads on Wednesday, although the government and the relevant authorities have not been reported to have reached an agreement with the groups.
