Letters | Future leadership of the SA Police Service
"The president should apply his mind diligently to this matter in the best interest of the citizens of our country."
The return of National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Fannie Masemola, is welcome. However, the major question, in the interest of our country, is what happens next. Masemola is due to retire at the end of April 2027.
Considering the recent dismissal of a number of senior police officers, the future of South Africa, and particularly the police service, must be given serious attention. The president should carefully consider a suitable successor and ensure that the transition in leadership is planned properly. In my view, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is a strong candidate to be considered.

His current role in overseeing organised crime gives him valuable experience in dealing with serious criminal activities. There is no better opportunity to begin preparing him for greater responsibility and to ensure continuity in leadership.
The future of the police service is too important to leave such a decision until the last minute. The president should apply his mind diligently to this matter in the best interest of the citizens of our country.
