“You Don’t Speak After The President, This Is Not Protocol”- President Ramaphosa Warns Xhakaza

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reportedly reminded Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi about speaking protocol during an ANC-related engagement, instructing him to inform Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza that he should not speak after the President.

The exchange has attracted attention on social media, with some commentators questioning the party’s internal coordination and the circumstances surrounding the reported instruction.

According to the account shared online, Ramaphosa told Lesufi that allowing Xhakaza to speak after him would not follow the expected protocol. He reportedly asked the Gauteng premier to communicate the matter to the mayor.

The incident has prompted criticism from some observers, who have interpreted the exchange as another indication of tensions or organisational challenges within the African National Congress (ANC).

However, the context of the conversation, including the event’s programme and the reasons behind the reported instruction, was not fully explained in the account circulating online. It is therefore unclear whether the exchange reflected a broader disagreement or simply an attempt to maintain the order of proceedings.

The incident has also sparked debate about leadership etiquette and the importance of clearly communicating speaking arrangements at political gatherings.

Neither the reported exchange nor the reactions to it necessarily establish that there is a wider dispute within the party. Further context would be needed to determine the circumstances surrounding the conversation and its significance for the ANC’s internal relations.
