Legon inaugurates Alex Dadey Snr Centre …To Honour KGL Boss’ Father

The University of Ghana Alumni Association (UGAA), in partnership with the University of Ghana, has commissioned the Alex A. Dadey Centre at the University of Ghana, Legon, in honour of Dr Alexander Apau Dadey Snr, a distinguished Ghanaian scholar and educational administrator.

The commissioning ceremony, held on October 23, 2026, recognised Dr Dadey Snr’s contributions to education, public service, mentorship and policy advocacy. Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, said Dr Dadey Snr, was an alumnus of the University and served on its Council from 1978 to 1985.

She said his service to the University was part of a distinguished career in education, during which he also benefited from the mentorship of Professor Alexander Kwapong. Dr Dadey Snr served as National Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) for five years and President of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) for six years.

He also served as headmaster of Achimota Senior High School and Okuapeman Senior High School, contributing to the administration and development of secondary education in Ghana.

The commissioning was attended by Professor Amfo and members of the University’s management, leaders of the UGAA, Mr Alex Apau Dadey, son of the late educationist and Founder and Executive Chairman of KGL Group of Companies, as well as other dignitaries from academia and the corporate sector.

Paying tribute to his father, Mr Dadey described him as a man of discipline, integrity, humility, intellectual curiosity and commitment to public service.

He said his father’s approach to life was anchored in the belief that education was not merely a pathway to individual success, but also a tool for transforming society and advancing national development.

Mr Dadey said his upbringing under his father’s guidance taught him that success should be measured not only by wealth accumulated, but also by lives transformed and institutions strengthened for the benefit of the country.

He added that his father instilled in his children and mentees the importance of protecting one’s reputation and building a legacy that would endure beyond one’s lifetime.

On the family’s approach to wealth creation and philanthropy, Mr Dadey said giving back to society and supporting institutions that contributed to their success were moral responsibilities.

“As a family, we believe in a moral responsibility to give back to society and the institutions that nurtured us, shaped our character, and provided the foundations for our success,” he said.

He explained that the establishment of the KGL Foundation reflected these values and the family tradition established by his father. According to him, the family’s philosophy was captured in the principle that “wealth creation and wealth distribution are two sides of the same coin.”

He said the family believed that private wealth accumulation should be accompanied by investments in communities and institutions that support business success and national development.

Mr Dadey said a successful business should create wealth for its shareholders, opportunities for its employees and lasting prosperity for the communities in which it operates. Through the KGL Foundation, the family seeks to translate its commitment to philanthropy into long-term socioeconomic benefits.

As part of its planned legacy projects between October and November 2026, the Foundation is scheduled to commission an ultra-modern, fully equipped technology centre with a capacity of 250 at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School.

It is also scheduled to commission a multimillion-dollar sports complex at Mfantsipim Senior High School in Cape Coast. In the health sector, the Foundation, in partnership with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, is constructing a diagnostic centre at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital.

The Foundation has also partnered with the Eve Medical Foundation to establish the KGL Eve Medical Centre at the KNUST Medical Village in Kumasi. The centre provides services in women’s wellness, mental health and general medical care.

Beyond infrastructure development, the KGL Foundation has supported Ghana’s national football teams, juvenile football and the Ghana Football Association (GFA). It has also provided scholarships to thousands of students through its various initiatives.

To ensure the long-term sustainability and maintenance of the Alex A. Dadey Centre, the KGL Foundation will fund its operations and upkeep for the next 20 years.
