UDA MCA Apologises After Threatening Sifuna’s Supporters

Nandi County MCA Truphosa Kuto has apologised following widespread condemnation over her controversial remarks targeting supporters of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, whom she appeared to threaten with expulsion from the county over their political allegiance.

Kuto, who represents Kameloi-Maraba Ward, issued the apology on Saturday, November 7, days after her comments during a funeral in Koloch sparked public outrage and accusations of promoting ethnic discrimination.

Speaking publicly, the MCA admitted that her remarks had hurt some people and asked those offended to forgive her. She urged residents from different communities to continue living together peacefully despite their political differences.

She maintained that her statements had been taken out of context and misinterpreted, insisting that she never intended to encourage hatred, violence or discrimination against any community based on political affiliation.

The controversy erupted after Kuto appeared to warn residents supporting Sifuna that they risked being sent back to their ancestral home in Hamisi, Vihiga County, if they refused to support President William Ruto’s re-election bid.

Her remarks attracted criticism from fellow Nandi MCAs, who accused her of promoting ethnic divisions and intimidating residents over their political choices. Several leaders also raised concerns about statements threatening peaceful coexistence.

Meanwhile, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has moved to question the MCA over her controversial statements. Commission chairperson Kepha Omae confirmed that Kuto is expected to appear before the commission on Monday, November 9.

In her response, Kuto urged politicians and their supporters to exercise restraint, arguing that political disagreements should be addressed through democratic and lawful processes without undermining the peaceful relationships existing among different communities.

The incident has renewed concerns over ethnic-based political rhetoric as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election, with increased scrutiny on leaders making statements touching on community identity, political loyalty and national cohesion.
