Minimum Wage Gives Netflix a New Approach to Episodic Comedy

Netflix is adding a shorter workplace comedy to its catalogue with Minimum Wage, a series set in a pizza shop.

Released in the US on 26 October 2026, the show has 14 episodes, each lasting between 12 and 20 minutes. Created by Jeremy Garelick and Will Phelps, it follows teenagers trying to balance school with demanding customers and a boss who makes their low-paying jobs even more difficult.

The pizzeria setting gives the series plenty of everyday workplace frustrations to draw from, turning awkward encounters and difficult shifts into comedy. Rather than following the usual half-hour sitcom format, Minimum Wage tells its stories in shorter episodes, offering viewers a quicker way to enjoy a workplace comedy.

Why Minimum Wage Is Taking a Shorter Route

The series began as part of American High Shorts, a collection of comedy videos that built an audience on social media. Netflix has adapted that quick-fire approach for a scripted series, retaining the focus on brief scenes, awkward encounters, and workplace absurdity.

According to Netflix’s official series page, the story follows teenagers trying to keep a local pizzeria running while dealing with a chaotic manager and the pressure of low-paid work. The streamer describes its style as “Short Form”, alongside labels such as mockumentary, workplace comedy and coming-of-age.

The format is a practical fit for the material. A disastrous customer interaction or an employee’s ridiculous decision can become a complete comic moment without needing a longer storyline to justify it. Viewers can watch an episode during a break or fit several into a short viewing session.

Can Short Episodes Make Comedy More Engaging?

Shorter episodes leave less room for scenes that do not move the joke or character forward. They can also make it easier for viewers to try an unfamiliar series without committing a large part of their evening.

That does not mean every episode has to feel like a social media clip. A successful comedy still needs characters viewers want to spend time with, running jokes that develop and relationships that change over time. Otherwise, quick episodes risk becoming a collection of sketches rather than a series with its own identity.

Early reviews suggest Minimum Wage has both promise and weaknesses. Decider’s review praised the cast’s chemistry and described the short episodes as an enjoyable, lightweight watch, while noting that the characters are not always deeply developed. The shorter format helps keep the show moving, but it cannot make every joke land.

How the Cast and Setting Support the Format

The series stars Aidan Micho, Grace Reiter, Hyde Healy, Julia DiCesare, Luke Burke, Ryan Micho, and Tommy Armstrong, with Randall Park appearing as the eccentric owner of the pizza shop.

The mockumentary style, with characters addressing the camera and reacting to workplace disasters, gives the show a familiar comedy structure. The setting also provides a steady supply of material: staff disagreements, awkward customer interactions, and the struggle to keep a struggling business open.
