Da Cruz Reacts as Kaizer Chiefs Crash Out After Penalty Defeat
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz believes his team should have beaten Red Arrows by at least three goals after the Soweto giants were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup on penalties.
Chiefs dominated proceedings and created several scoring opportunities, but their failure to convert those chances proved costly as their continental campaign came to an end.
Da Cruz was disappointed with the outcome, insisting that his team had done enough to win comfortably before the contest was decided by a penalty shootout.
“We dominated all the game, we created a lot of chances,” Da Cruz said, as quoted by iDiski Times.
“We lost the game on penalties, but we actually lost it before because we created a lot of chances.
“We only scored one goal, normally we must win this game 3-0 or 4-0.”
The French coach’s comments highlighted Chiefs’ biggest problem on the night: their inability to turn their attacking dominance into goals.
Although the Glamour Boys created opportunities, they managed to find the net only once, leaving the tie to be decided from the penalty spot.
For a club with Chiefs’ ambitions, the elimination will be difficult to accept, particularly given Da Cruz’s belief that the team had enough chances to secure a convincing victory in normal time.
The defeat also raises questions about the team’s efficiency in front of goal. Dominating possession and creating chances can put a team in a strong position, but failing to finish those opportunities can ultimately determine the outcome of a knockout tie.
Chiefs will now have to shift their attention to their domestic commitments after their continental ambitions ended earlier than expected.
Da Cruz and his technical team must find a way to improve the team’s finishing while maintaining the attacking approach that created so many opportunities against Red Arrows.
For the supporters, the disappointment will be compounded by the feeling that qualification was within reach. Chiefs had opportunities to take control of the contest but could not make their dominance count when it mattered most.
Ultimately, Da Cruz believes the result did not reflect his team’s performance. However, the penalty defeat serves as a reminder that creating chances is only part of the job; converting them is what wins knockout matches.
