Some residents of Kebbi State on Saturday blocked the busy Jega-Kontagora Road in protest against persistent attacks on their communities allegedly carried out by Lakurawa terrorists.
A video circulating on social media showed protesters setting bonfires on the road despite attempts by police officers to disperse them with tear gas.
The protest reportedly left motorists and commuters stranded for several hours before the road was eventually reopened to traffic.
A resident of Jega, Nazeer Muhammad, told our reporter that several surrounding villages had been deserted following repeated attacks by the armed group, forcing residents to flee to safer locations.
“Our town is currently flooded with displaced persons, some of whom are sleeping in the open,” he said.
According to him, some of the displaced residents came from Mayama and Ungushi communities in Sokoto State.
Another Jega resident, who identified himself simply as Malam Idris, said about eight trucks carrying displaced persons arrived in the town on Sunday.
“Some of them are living in schools, while others have nowhere to shelter. They are surviving on assistance from good Samaritans,” he said.
