Diwali 2026: How to light up the Festival of Lights safely, for your family and your pets

Diwali 2026 is just around the corner, and homes across South Africa will soon glow with lamps, lights and colour.

The Festival of Lights celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.

For many families, it’s a time of prayer, food, family and fireworks.

Here’s how to celebrate safely, while keeping your neighbours and pets calm too.

Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, as part of a five-day festival that runs from Friday, 6 November, to Tuesday, 10 November.

South Africa has one of the largest Diwali celebrations outside India, especially in Durban.

WHAT ARE THE FIREWORKS RULES?

Rules differ between municipalities, so check your local municipality’s official notice before you celebrate.

In Cape Town, the City has warned that there are no designated fireworks sites for Guy Fawkes, Diwali or New Year’s Eve this year.

The City has also warned that no fireworks are allowed without a permit.

According to the City of Cape Town, anyone who wants to host a public fireworks display must apply for a permit, under the Explosives Act and the City’s Community Fire Safety By-Law. Applications go to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

People who don’t follow the by-law can expect a fine of R300 or more.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE

Loud bangs can be terrifying for pets, and some animals run away in panic.

• Keep pets indoors

during the celebrations, especially in the evenings.

• Create a safe space,

such as a quiet room with their bed, water and favourite toys.

• Close windows and curtains

to muffle the sound and block out flashes.

• Play calming music or the TV

  to help mask the noise.

• Make sure your pet has an ID tag or microchip,

  in case they escape.

• Speak to your vet

in advance if your pet is very anxious, since they may be able to recommend ways to help.

• Never leave pets tied up outside

  during fireworks.

SAFETY TIPS FOR DIYAS AND CANDLES

Diyas, or oil lamps, are at the heart of Diwali, but open flames need care.

• Keep diyas and candles away from curtains,

  decorations and anything flammable.

• Never leave flames unattended,

  especially around children and pets.

• Place lamps on stable, heat-resistant surfaces.

• Keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby,

  just in case.

QUIETER WAYS TO CELEBRATE

If your family prefers a calmer Diwali, there are plenty of ways to celebrate without loud fireworks:

• Light up your home

with diyas, candles and fairy lights.

• Create a rangoli,

a colourful pattern made with coloured powder, rice or flowers at your entrance.

• Attend a community celebration

or temple event, where displays are organised and permitted.

• Share sweets and meals

  with family, friends and neighbours.

• Let your neighbours know

if you’re planning to celebrate, especially if they have pets or young children.
