Trump Govt Breaks Silence on Ruto’s 2027 Re-Election Bid, Declares Its Stand

The administration of US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington will not endorse President William Ruto’s bid for another term in office or support any opposition politician ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

The position was outlined by Henry Wooster, Trump’s nominee for the position of United States Ambassador to Kenya, during his appearance before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday, September 24.

Wooster said the United States intended to maintain a neutral position throughout Kenya’s presidential contest and would not intervene in favour of either the incumbent or his potential challengers.

According to the ambassador-designate, Washington’s primary concern ahead of the August 2027 elections would be the preservation of stability and the promotion of a peaceful electoral process. He stressed that the United States was not interested in determining which candidate or political party emerges victorious.

“Our watchword, the U.S. watchword for August 2027, when the elections are scheduled to take place, is stability. Not an unusual watchword for U.S. foreign policy, but it happens to be grounded in truth. That is exactly what we want,” Wooster stated.

He further emphasized that the United States would not choose sides among Kenya’s presidential contenders or political parties.

“We are not picking sides in the election, A or B or any other party. What we are looking for is stability,” he added.

The statement comes as Kenya’s political landscape continues to heat up ahead of the 2027 General Election. Government and opposition leaders have increasingly intensified efforts to strengthen their political networks and attract support from different parts of the country.

The Kenyan diaspora has also become an important focus for political figures preparing for the next election. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has recently engaged Kenyans living in the United States, while President Ruto also met members of the Kenyan community in America during his recent trip for the United Nations General Assembly.

Trump nominated Wooster to become the next US ambassador to Kenya in June 2026, following the departure of former ambassador Meg Whitman in 2024. His remarks therefore offer an indication of Washington’s stated approach to Kenya’s upcoming electoral process, with stability and peaceful elections identified as key priorities rather than support for a particular political side.
