Sonay Kartal Misses Historic Wuhan Open Title as British Tennis Star Runs Out of Steam in Final

British tennis player Sonay Kartal missed out on the biggest title of her career after losing to Poland’s Maja Chwalinska in the Wuhan Open final.

The 24-year-old started strongly but was unable to maintain her advantage, eventually suffering a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 defeat against the French Open runner-up.

Kartal had been hoping to win the WTA 1,000 tournament in only her third event since returning from a six-month absence caused by a back injury.

Chwalinska Overcomes Kartal After Three-Set Battle

Kartal appeared in control during the opening set, which she won 6-2. She also moved ahead by a break in the second set before Chwalinska fought back to change the direction of the match.

The Polish player gradually gained control as Kartal struggled to maintain her physical and mental energy following a demanding week of competition.

Chwalinska, 25, experienced some nerves while closing in on the title but eventually secured victory with her third championship point. Kartal sent a forehand beyond the baseline to end the contest.

Kartal Misses Chance to Make British Tennis History

Victory would have made Kartal the first British woman to win a WTA 1,000 title since Johanna Konta achieved the feat in 2017.

Ranked 170th in the world at the beginning of the Wuhan Open, Kartal produced a series of impressive performances to reach Sunday’s final. Her run included victories over several prominent opponents, including players ranked in the world’s top 10 and former major champions.

However, Chwalinska, who made an unexpected run to this year’s French Open final at Roland Garros, proved too strong in the closing stages.

British Number One Ranking Awaits Kartal

Despite the final defeat, Kartal is set to reach a new milestone when the rankings are updated on Monday.

She is expected to rise to 50th in the world, placing her just below her career-high ranking and making her Britain’s number-one women’s player for the first time.

The achievement follows an exceptional tournament for Kartal, who was competing in only the 10th match of her comeback after her lengthy injury lay-off.

Although she did not secure the trophy, her performance in Wuhan marked a significant return to form after six months away from competition.
