Sky Energy Africa has marked its 10th anniversary by unveiling electric vehicles, a ride hailing app called Sky e Ride and 40 charging stations to be built across Malawi in a project worth between K12.5 billion and K15 billion.
Speaking during the launch in Lilongwe on Friday, Sky Energy Managing Director Schizzo Thomson said the company began its journey by addressing Malawi’s energy challenges through solar technologies but that it is now moving into transport with electric mobility.
“Ten years have been a very interesting journey for Sky Energy as we lived through the problems our country is facing. We started by addressing energy challenges using solar energy technologies, but this time we are coming in with Sky E Ride to solve a transportation problem,” Thomson said.
He said the Sky e Ride application was designed to move people from one place to another using modern technology and electric vehicles.
Thomson said charging infrastructure was part of the unveiling, with 40 stations to be deployed nationwide.
Reflecting on the company’s journey, Thomson said Sky Energy Africa has been working to solve problems of food, gas and energy, and has remained committed to producing energy for Malawians.
He said, three years ago, the company launched its first electric vehicle and is now expanding into public transport with a ride hailing platform.
United Democratic Front president Atupele Muluzi described the launch as a game changer.
“The future is here. This innovation offers affordable transport and reduces reliance on fuel imports. At a time when forex is tight, this is the kind of solution Malawi needs. It is bold, it is innovative, and I congratulate Sky Energy Africa,” Muluzi said.
He said the Sky e Ride app is similar to global platforms like Uber, giving passengers security and convenience while creating opportunities for young people.
Muluzi said Malawi’s youth were talented but often lacked opportunities, leading many to leave the country.
He said Sky Energy Africa was showing that innovation could be done at home, creating jobs and giving young people confidence in the future.
Sky Energy Africa was founded 10 years ago.
