Benevento forward David Okereke has won Serie B’s Goal of the Month award for September after his 30-meter strike against Hellas Verona was voted the best goal in the Italian second division.
The Nigerian’s effort beat two other contenders, including Andrea Belotti’s bicycle kick and a finish from Licina. The goal came on September 11 during Benevento’s 3-1 victory over Verona.
With the score level at 1-1 in the 59th minute, Okereke collected the ball outside the penalty area before firing a powerful right-footed shot into the top corner past goalkeeper Nicola Leali.
Davide Lamesta added another goal six minutes later to seal Benevento’s first league win of the campaign.
Okereke, 29, joined Benevento in August as a free agent after leaving Cremonese. He signed a contract until June 2028, with an option for an additional season.
The forward has scored once in four Serie B appearances this season, with his goal against Verona now earning him the monthly award.
Despite his experience in European football, Okereke is yet to make a senior appearance for Nigeria.
The former Nigeria U-23 international scored against Libya in a 2019 Olympic qualifying match and was invited to the Super Eagles camp ahead of a friendly against Egypt, but he did not feature. The Abuja College Academy product has not represented the senior national team since then.
