Stop The Marches Now: Defence Minister Warns Anti-Immigration Groups Ahead Of Elections

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga has issued a strong warning regarding escalating anti-illegal immigration demonstrations, cautioning that continuous public unrest threatens to overstretch state security resources and distract the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) from its core election support duties ahead of the 4 November 2026 local government polls.

Speaking on the operational readiness of security cluster agencies, Motshekga highlighted that military personnel are increasingly being called upon to support the South African Police Service (SAPS) in managing volatile community marches and targeted anti-foreigner operations. She noted that while the armed forces remain committed to safeguarding internal stability, diverting significant troop numbers toward protest management strains military logistics and compromises primary deployment schedules planned for election day security.

The minister pointed out that the strategic primary mission of the military during an election period is to guarantee a safe, secure, and neutral environment across all nine provinces. The military is tasked with safeguarding critical infrastructure, escorting sensitive voting material, and backing up law enforcement officers in high-risk voting districts. However, recurring flare-ups sparked by anti-immigration activist groups force the defence ministry to reallocate emergency units, effectively spreading personnel thin right when strategic stability is required for the electoral process.

Motshekga’s remarks come amidst heightened security deployments in hotspot regions, where civil movement marches have challenged local municipal stability and drawn heavy police interventions. The minister urged protest leaders, political movements, and local organizers to exercise restraint and utilize established legal and administrative channels rather than resorting to disruptive street action. She stressed that law enforcement agencies must be given space to conduct statutory immigration checks and boundary management without pressure from vigilante activities or mass civil disruption.

The defence ministry emphasized that the SANDF operates under strict constitutional boundaries and that sustained police-support deployments incur heavy operational expenses from an already constrained national defence budget. Motshekga appealed to civic organizations to prioritize national peace, warning that allowing localized friction to escalate into widespread violence risks undermining voter turnout and threatening the integrity of the upcoming local council elections.

As political parties make their final push to rally voters, state security agencies are maintaining active coordination across national and provincial joint operational centers. Motshekga assured citizens that despite the added security strains, the SANDF will fulfill its constitutional mandate to support the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and ensure that South Africans can cast their ballots safely and without intimidation on 4 November 2026.
