Rugby: Ireland Prop Furlong Cited Over Alleged Groin Grab

Ireland prop Tadhg Furlong has been cited for alleged foul play following Leinster’s 24-18 victory over Munster in the United Rugby Championship at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

The allegation concerns an incident involving Munster back-row forward Gavin Coombes during the closing stages of the first half. Coombes raised the matter with referee Andrew Brace, but television match official Colin Stanley was unable to identify video evidence of the incident at the time.

Furlong has subsequently been cited under Law 9.27 of World Rugby’s regulations, which prohibits conduct contrary to good sportsmanship, including grabbing, twisting or squeezing another player’s genitals.

In a statement, the United Rugby Championship said arrangements for the disciplinary process were underway and further details would be announced in due course.

The outcome could have significant consequences for the 33-year-old prop, who risks missing Ireland’s upcoming Nations Championship fixtures against Argentina, Fiji and South Africa in Dublin if he is found guilty.

A suspension could also affect his availability for Leinster’s Investec Champions Cup pool match against Sale Sharks and the festive interprovincial derbies against Ulster and Munster.

The case follows a similar incident in October 2025 involving South African front-row forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels, who received a nine-match suspension after being found guilty of grabbing Connacht player Josh Murphy’s genitals during a URC match involving the Bulls.

Wessels was initially handed a 12-week suspension, described as the minimum sanction under the applicable World Rugby disciplinary rules, before the ban was reduced by three weeks in recognition of his good conduct and disciplinary record.

Munster head coach Clayton McMillan backed his player after Saturday’s defeat, saying he would support his squad if a player made such an allegation.

“I would back our players 100% that if they make an allegation like that,” McMillan said.

Leinster head coach Leo Cullen said he had not witnessed the incident but acknowledged its seriousness.

The disciplinary process is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the allegation and whether Furlong breached World Rugby’s regulations. Until a decision is reached, the allegation remains unproven.
