Atlético Madrid warn Real Madrid over refereeing dispute as derby tensions escalate

With the next Madrid derby approaching, Atlético accuse their rivals of intimidating referees and threatening the integrity of Spanish football

Atlético Madrid have issued a sharp statement accusing Real Madrid of crossing what they describe as “red lines,” with tensions between the two clubs escalating sharply ahead of their next derby.

Speaking to Marca, Atlético claimed that certain actions and comments from Real Madrid have gone too far and risk causing lasting damage to Spanish football.

“There are red lines that cannot be crossed, and they’ve done it again. You cannot show this kind of disrespect,” Atlético said.

The club expressed particular concern about what it sees as a deliberate campaign to influence the atmosphere surrounding the return derby through pressure on match officials.

“They already want to start playing the return derby now, with the referees intimidated so that mistakes go in their favour,” the statement said.

One of the sharper moments in Atlético’s statement came in a pointed reference to Megía Dávila, a former referee who now serves as Real Madrid’s team delegate. In a sarcastic remark about refereeing appointments, Atlético suggested the only appointment Real Madrid would welcome is Dávila himself.

The comments lay bare the increasingly strained relationship between the two clubs, particularly over refereeing controversies in La Liga. Atlético questioned why Real Madrid continue to direct public attention toward officials despite recent changes within the Technical Committee of Referees. At the Metropolitano, there is frustration over what Atlético regard as a sustained effort to undermine confidence in the refereeing system.

The club also took aim at Real Madrid TV, the club’s official channel, arguing that videos criticising referees before matches place undue pressure on officials and compromise their ability to operate independently.

The dispute reflects a wider and increasingly uncomfortable debate in Spanish football about the relationship between clubs, referees and public criticism. Refereeing decisions have become a flashpoint around La Liga fixtures, with clubs frequently going public when controversial incidents occur.

For Atlético, however, the issue has moved well beyond individual decisions. Their statement frames the situation as a fundamental threat to the sport’s credibility.

“The integrity of Spanish football is at risk. Either we stop them now or there will be no turning back,” Atlético warned.

Real Madrid have consistently defended their right to highlight what they consider to be refereeing errors. Atlético’s position, made plain yesterday, is that the continued and coordinated nature of that public pressure has now crossed an acceptable line.

The statement also lands at a moment of broader scrutiny for the Technical Committee of Referees, which has faced repeated questions over consistency and transparency across several recent seasons. Clubs and supporters continue to demand clearer standards from officials, and the public battle between the two Madrid clubs is unlikely to ease that pressure.

With another derby on the horizon, the dispute is set to remain a major talking point. Both clubs will ultimately settle matters on the pitch, but Atlético’s statement makes clear that the argument over refereeing and public influence is already being fought well away from it.

The next Madrid derby will be watched not only for the fierce competition it invariably produces, but for the charged atmosphere that this increasingly public feud has created around it.
