Hima Cement has committed Shs 250 million to Impis Rugby Club in a two-year sponsorship deal that renames the Makerere-based side Hima Impis.
The partnership, unveiled at Impis’ home ground, the Graveyard, provides Shs 150 million in direct financial support, while the remaining Shs 100 million goes towards infrastructure improvements, including the renovation of the club’s pavilion, as well as media activations.
The deal comes after Impis’ return to Uganda’s top-flight rugby competition and enjoyed an encouraging campaign last season, recording notable victories over established sides such as Heathens and Kobs.
Philemon Mubiru, the Hima Cement head of marketing, says the company was attracted to Impis by its strong following and potential for further growth.
“Hima Cement is determined to support Ugandan sport, particularly Impis, because it is a club with a vibrant fan base,” Mubiru says.
“Considering that it has quite a number of students, there is great optimism about what they can achieve after the great season they had last year.”
Phillip Katumba, the Impis vice patron, describes the deal as a significant boost for one of Uganda’s oldest rugby clubs.
“Impis is among the oldest rugby clubs in Uganda and, over time, has built a large, diverse and passionate fan base consisting of current Makerere University students, alumni, former players and many others across the region,” Katumba says.
He says the partnership strengthens the club both on and off the field.
“This sponsorship strengthens our resolve, boosts our morale and creates an environment where rugby can thrive as a beacon of discipline, teamwork, resilience and collaboration,” he says.
Katumba adds that the backing also serves as motivation for the players.
“To the boys, this is more than a sponsorship. It is a reminder that their sweat, sacrifice and determination are recognised and valued. To the wider Makerere community, it proves that rugby is not just a game but a force that unites, uplifts and builds character.”
Peter Odong, the Uganda Rugby Union secretary general, also welcomes the partnership, saying it comes at a time when Impis are showing renewed progress.
“With its rich and fascinating history, the club remains an important development pathway for nurturing talent, with players going on to perform at the highest level on the local and global stage.”
Odong says Hima Cement’s involvement is a vote of confidence in the club’s leadership and technical team.
He pledges Uganda Rugby’s support for the partnership and urges more companies to invest in the sport. “This development sends a message to the corporate world that rugby is open for business, it is growing and needs more partners,” Odong says.
