Kakamega: A Man Secretly Receives KSh 1 Million From Women Before Being Arrested by Police
AI summary
Police in Kakamega have arrested a suspect following an alleged fraud scheme in which more than 200 women reportedly lost over KSh 1 million after being promised a chance to meet President William Ruto at State House in Nairobi.
The women, who are survivors of the 2007 and 2008 post-election violence, said they were informed that the president wanted to meet them and offer assistance to help them overcome their financial difficulties.According to the victims, they were mobilized by a woman identified as Refa Ndera, who allegedly instructed each participant to contribute KSh 3,450 for transport to Nairobi.
With more than 200 women making payments, the amount collected reportedly exceeded KSh 1 million.
Some victims revealed that they had borrowed money and taken loans to raise the required fees because they believed the meeting would give them an opportunity to seek help from the government.
However, their expectations were disappointed when the buses that were supposed to transport them to Nairobi failed to arrive.
The women said they waited for several hours at Mrokaden in Kakamega, hoping the vehicles would eventually show up. Some also claimed that they were issued with cards presented as State House entry passes, but the cards were later taken away, raising doubts about the planned meeting. After waiting until late at night without receiving transport, the women realized that the promised trip might not happen.
They subsequently went to Kakamega Police Station, where they spent the night recording statements and reporting the incident.
The victims expressed frustration over the losses, saying they had gone through financial difficulties to raise the money because they trusted the organizers.
They questioned why they had to pay for transport despite being told that the president had invited them.
Kakamega Officer Commanding Police Division Vincent Cherutich confirmed that one suspect had been apprehended and was assisting detectives with investigations.
The affected women are now calling for the return of their money and the prosecution of those responsible for the alleged scam.
