Strengthening South Africa’s circular economy: The collective commitment of TGRC members

Every bottle and jar collected for recycling represents something far greater than waste diverted from landfill. It reflects the collective commitment of South Africa’s glass packaging industry to keeping valuable materials in circulation and building a stronger, more resilient circular economy.

At The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC), we see this commitment in action every day. As the Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) for South Africa’s glass packaging industry, TGRC works on behalf of our members to strengthen the country’s glass recycling ecosystem. Together with manufacturers, brand owners, collectors, processors, transporters, waste pickers, retailers, government and consumers, we help ensure that glass remains a valuable resource rather than becoming waste.

Our members’ commitment goes far beyond compliance. Through their continued investment, they fund the infrastructure, partnerships and programmes that enable glass recycling to happen at scale across South Africa. From glass recycling banks and collection networks to transport subsidies, consumer education initiatives and the payment of waste picker service fees, these investments strengthen the systems that keep glass in circulation and support the country’s transition towards a circular economy.

This collective approach demonstrates what meaningful Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) looks like in practice. By working together through TGRC, producers are investing in long-term solutions that strengthen the entire glass recycling value chain and create lasting value for communities and the environment.

Because glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without losing quality, every bottle and jar recovered through South Africa’s recycling network has the potential to become a new bottle or jar again. This is why investing in collection systems matters. The more glass that is recovered, the less material ends up in landfill, the lower the demand for virgin raw materials, and the more efficiently valuable resources remain in circulation.

However, recycling does not happen simply because glass is recyclable. Behind every bottle collected is a network of people working to recover it, from households separating their recyclables to waste pickers, collectors, transporters, processors and recycling businesses that ensure glass is returned to production.

For many South Africans, recycling is also a source of income and opportunity. Waste pickers, collectors, entrepreneurs and buy-back centres play an integral role in the glass recycling ecosystem. Through the initiatives supported by TGRC and our members, recovered glass helps create sustainable livelihoods, enables businesses to grow and thrive, and contributes to local economic development while ensuring valuable material remains in productive use.

This demonstrates that the circular economy delivers far more than environmental benefits. It creates jobs, stimulates local economic activity and strengthens communities, while enabling businesses to meet their sustainability commitments through practical, measurable action.

Through the continued support of our members, TGRC will continue strengthening South Africa’s glass recycling ecosystem by further investing in infrastructure, supporting entrepreneurs and waste pickers, and driving initiatives that increase glass collection. Together, we are creating economic opportunities, reducing waste and delivering lasting environmental, economic and social value for South Africa.
