“I’m celebrating everything I survived” . . . Laiza’s inspiring journey from ‘Mop Driver’ to car owner

For years, Laiza Moyo’s life was defined by hard work, survival and the determination to keep going, even when life seemed determined to hold her back.

Today, however, the Zimbabwean-born content creator has a new reason to celebrate. The woman who became affectionately known online as Laiza The Mop Driver is now proudly calling herself Laiza the Car Driver after purchasing her first vehicle, a milestone that carries far more meaning than simply owning a car.

For Laiza, who hails from Filabusi and is now based in Johannesburg, South Africa, the vehicle is a reminder of just how far she has travelled.

It is a journey that began in humble circumstances in Zimbabwe, where, as a young girl, she learnt responsibility from her grandmother and was exposed to the realities of hardship at an age when most children were simply expected to be children.

She grew up helping to run a household and, while still a high school student, began cleaning teachers’ cottages.

Years later, domestic work would become her full-time profession when she moved to South Africa.

Today, Laiza works as a live-in house executive in Johannesburg, balancing her work with raising her children and building a rapidly growing career as a content creator.

But behind the humour that has made thousands laugh online is a woman whose journey has been shaped by experiences that could easily have broken her.

In a deeply emotional reflection following the purchase of her first car and her appearance on South African broadcaster SABC, Laiza opened up about the difficult circumstances she endured while growing up.

“Lord, I don’t think I worship you enough… Sometimes I sit quietly and think about where I come from, and honestly, God, I don’t think I thank You enough.

“I come from humble beginnings. I went to school without shoes. I remember stepping on other children’s pee in school toilets because there was no proper place for us to use. I used cloths as pads because that was what I had.

“I went through things no child should ever have to go through. I was sexually abused. I experienced pain, poverty, rejection and moments where I wondered if my life would ever change. Then life took me into domestic work.”

Yet, despite everything she went through, Laiza kept moving. She cleaned homes, mopped floors, took care of households and carried responsibilities that many may never fully understand. But somewhere along that journey, she found another voice – one that would eventually introduce her to the world.

Through her phone, Laiza began telling stories. Drawing from her everyday experiences in domestic work, she turned ordinary moments into humorous and relatable content. Her videos mostly featuring her employer’s children, resonated with many people, particularly women and domestic workers who saw their own lives, struggles and laughter reflected in her storytelling.

What began as sharing experiences gradually grew into a community.

Today, Laiza has more than 600 000 followers on Facebook alone, with her honesty, humour and fearless approach to storytelling earning her a loyal following across South Africa and beyond.

Her content has also helped bring visibility and dignity to domestic workers, a group whose sacrifices often go unnoticed.

For Laiza, domestic work has never simply been about cleaning a house. It has been about survival, raising her children and providing for her family. And now, it has become part of the story that has taken her from being known as Laiza The Mop Driver to becoming Laiza the Car Driver.

Her excitement over buying her first car was captured in a comic video that has continued to make waves online. In the video, a visibly excited Laiza is driven around as she enthusiastically tells anyone willing to listen that she has bought her first vehicle. For some, it may have been a funny and entertaining moment. For Laiza, however, the celebration represented something much deeper. It was a moment of looking back at the girl who once went to school without shoes and realising that she was still standing.

The trending video is the one that caught the attention of SABC, which featured Laiza, with presenters joining in the excitement and hoping that she had indeed bought the car.

Reacting to the feature, Laiza could hardly contain her emotions as she reflected on the journey that had brought her to that moment.

“I went from mopping floors and wiping dogs’ bums to standing in front of my phone creating content, and today, the same world that never knew my name, is watching me on national television, SABC News.

“Lord, who am I that you are so mindful of me? I’m not saying this because I have arrived. I’m saying it because I know where You brought me from.

“From no shoes, from using cloths as pads, from surviving abuse, from mopping and wiping, from being underestimated, to being watched by the world. Only God.”

Laiza says her celebration is not only about where she is today, but also about everything she had to overcome to get there.

“If you ever see me celebrating, please understand that I’m not celebrating just the moment. I’m celebrating everything I survived to get here. Lord, forgive me for the days I complained when You had already done so much for me. I’m grateful. I’m deeply, deeply grateful.

“And if you could take a girl from those beginnings and put her on national television, then I know my story is nowhere near finished.”

To celebrate the milestone, Laiza has lined up a party that will be held in Randburg, South Africa in September.
