Madlanga Commission to Receive Largest Share of R516m Allocation

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry will receive the largest share of the R516 million allocated to three commissions, after several extensions to its work.

Godongwana discussed the funding while briefing the media ahead of his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) on Wednesday, 21 October 2026.

He also pointed to the commission’s quarterly reporting process and arrests made following its work, describing the approach as an important innovation.

The R516 million allocation covers three commissions, with the Madlanga Commission receiving the biggest portion. The briefing did not specify the individual amounts allocated to each commission.

The funding comes as the Madlanga Commission’s timetable has been extended.

Last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the deadline for the commission’s final report had been moved to 25 January 2027. It had initially been expected to submit the report by 16 November.

The extensions have added to the commission’s work and are reflected in the larger share of funding it is set to receive, according to Godongwana.

The commission’s inquiry has continued alongside a process of quarterly reporting, which the finance minister highlighted during his remarks.

Godongwana also drew attention to arrests made following the commission’s work. He cited the reporting process and the arrests as features of the commission’s approach, calling it an important innovation.

His comments linked the inquiry’s ongoing work not only to its final report but also to developments taking place before its conclusion.

The commission is one of three bodies covered by the R516 million allocation. The overall funding figure was disclosed ahead of the MTBPS, which sets out the government’s medium-term fiscal outlook and spending priorities.

Ramaphosa’s decision to extend the final-report deadline gives the commission additional time to complete its work and submit its findings.

The revised date of 25 January 2027 replaces the previous deadline of 16 November.

Godongwana’s remarks place the commission’s funding and extended timetable within the wider public spending discussion.

The quarterly reporting process was another point of emphasis in the briefing. Godongwana said the process, together with arrests already made following the commission’s work, represented an important innovation.

The commission’s final report is now expected early next year, after the additional time announced by the president.

The funding announcement comes as the government prepares to present its Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement.

Godongwana’s comments highlighted the cost of supporting the three commissions and the particular demands of the Madlanga inquiry, whose work has required several extensions.
