Heatstroke and death danger: Zimbabweans warned as extreme heat rises

Zimbabweans have been urged to protect themselves as extreme temperatures increase the risk of serious health complications.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has issued a public warning about the dangers of prolonged heat exposure.

In an advisory released on Thursday, 5 November, the ministry highlighted the health risks associated with the current hot conditions.

It warned that intense sunlight, high temperatures and demanding physical activities could overwhelm the body’s cooling system.

Consequently, people exposed to excessive heat could develop dehydration, heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

Health officials described heatstroke as a potentially life-threatening emergency requiring urgent medical attention.

The warning also comes ahead of a challenging 2026/2027 rainfall season.

Zimbabwe’s seasonal climate outlook points towards below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures.

The ministry linked these conditions to the expected influence of El Niño.

“The 2026/2027 seasonal climate outlook indicates the likelihood of below-normal rainfall and warmer-than-normal temperatures associated with El Niño conditions, potentially increasing heat exposure and water stress,” the ministry said.

Children, Elderly People and Outdoor Workers Face Greater Risks

Although extreme heat can affect anyone, health officials identified several particularly vulnerable groups.

These include young children, elderly people and pregnant women.

People with chronic illnesses and persons with disabilities also face increased risks.

Meanwhile, workers who spend extended periods outdoors must exercise additional caution.

This group includes farmers, construction workers and street vendors.

Their exposure to direct sunlight and physically demanding activities increases their vulnerability.

The ministry’s warning highlights the importance of taking precautions as temperatures rise.

Zimbabweans should remain alert to heat-related illnesses throughout the coming months.
