Motorists are being warned to watch out for scammers allegedly offering to fast-track vehicle licence renewals for hundreds of rands.
Motorists trying to renew their vehicle licences have been warned to keep their wallets shut after scammers allegedly began targeting applicants with offers to “assist” them for a fee.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has sounded the alarm over people claiming they can facilitate vehicle licence renewal applications for payments of up to R450.
The warning comes as motorists are urged to be wary of anyone demanding money in exchange for help accessing RTMC services.
According to the RTMC, there is no application fee for accessing any of its services.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane warned members of the public against falling for offers of assistance that come with a price tag.
“The RTMC would like to warn the public about scammers who claim to offer assistance to vehicle licence renewal applicants.”
The corporation said motorists should not hand over money to individuals claiming they can facilitate or speed up the application process.
The RTMC said members of the public should resist any offer of assistance linked to payment.
Zwane said motorists who encounter such schemes should report them to law enforcement.
“Such matters should be reported to the police or the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit.”
The RTMC has urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid paying anyone who claims they can provide access to its services for a fee.
