2027 polls: Women mobilising 10m votes for Tinubu – Minister
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, says Nigerian women are mobilising to deliver 10 million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima in the 2027 general elections. Sulaiman-Ibrahim stated this at a national Muslim women’s prayer session organised by the Power of 10 Million Movement in collaboration with the Nasrul-Lahi-L-Fatih Society (NASFAT) and the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN). She said
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, says Nigerian women are mobilising to deliver 10 million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima in the 2027 general elections. She said the gathering was part of efforts to mobilise women across the country to support the Tinubu administration’s continuity agenda, adding that women were prepared to speak with one voice ahead of the 2027 elections.  According to her, the movement is bringing together women from different backgrounds and political affiliations who support the administration’s policies and want to express appreciation for its programmes targeting women and children.  “Nigerian women, we’ve been saying it out loud, and we continue to say that come 2027, we will not gamble; we will speak as one. One voice, one choice, one movement, one mandate,” she said.  The minister explained that the initiative followed a series of meetings during which participating groups agreed to mobilise 10 million votes for the President.  She said the movement intended to leverage the voting strength of organised women’s groups, particularly women who possess Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate collectively in elections.  Sulaiman-Ibrahim maintained that the participating women were not necessarily members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but supported the administration’s continuity agenda because of what she described as its gender-friendly policies.  The minister said the Tinubu administration had placed issues affecting women and children prominently on the national agenda, including child protection, child development and women’s economic empowerment.  She added that the government would continue to review gender-friendly and child-friendly laws and strengthen institutions responsible for protecting the rights and welfare of women and children.  “We appreciate Mr President. He is giving governance a human face. This is unprecedented,” she said.  The minister also called on Nigerian women to support the movement’s activities, stressing that the initiative would extend beyond the Muslim community.  She disclosed that Christian women would hold a similar prayer session on Sunday as part of efforts to seek divine guidance ahead of the 2027 elections.  At the Muslim prayer gathering, participants recited the Holy Quran and prayed for the nation’s peace, the President’s health and wisdom, and the success of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket.  Sulaiman-Ibrahim said the movement would continue its grassroots mobilisation, noting that its members had been working together for the past three years to engage women in communities across the country.  She expressed confidence that the government would sustain its commitment to policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerian women and children.  Also speaking at the event, Princess Omotola Omole, President of the Association of Nigerian Businesswomen and the ECOWAS Businesswomen Nigerian Chapter, said women in business were participating in the initiative to pray for a successful election and support the President’s second-term bid.  Omole said the women appreciated the administration’s focus on promoting Nigerian businesses and local content, adding that they also recognised the contributions of the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, to women’s development.  “We are all here to support Mr President for what he is doing for women and his policy to promote Nigerian local content. We are gathered here to pray for a successful election and a successful second term for our President,” she said.  She added that Christian women would join the prayer initiative on Sunday, describing the gatherings as an opportunity for women from different religious backgrounds to participate in the movement.  Meanwhile, Amima Bukola Ajikobi also expressed appreciation for the minister’s visit and the mobilisation effort.  The mobilisation comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the Power of 10 Million Movement seeking to consolidate support among women through religious gatherings, grassroots engagement and advocacy for policies affecting women and children.
